The post will be based at Glasgow Dental Hospital with service provision at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Gartnavel General Hospital. </p><p>Applicants must have full GDC registration and be eligible for inclusion on the GDC Specialist Register in Paediatric Dentistry. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of post-CCST training and/or experience, and be within 6 months of completion of that training from date of interview.</p><p>Essential: possession of CCST or eligibility, and successful completion of post-CCST (FTTA) higher training or within six months of completion or equivalent. We have significant challenges ahead as we deliver the objectives set out in Better Health Better Care and we seek to ensure that we have the right people for the right posts delivering a comprehensive health service to the population of Greater Glasgow and Clyde.</p><p>The Acute service in North Glasgow presently employs more than 14,300 staff serving a core catchment population of 560,000. Our patients not only come from Glasgow but are also drawn from within the wider Health Board area, the West of Scotland region and in the case of National Services from across Scotland. </p><p>Today Glasgow is a compact, vibrant and modern city. In fact Glasgow’s scale comes as a surprise to some people. It has the largest suburban rail network outside London and is second only to the UK Capital as a retail centre. There are top- ranking schools, excellent leisure facilities, beautiful golf courses and elegant accommodation across all price ranges. The night life and restaurants are renowned and its opera, theatres, art galleries and museums offer plenty of cultural stimulation.</p><p>From Glasgow, the West of Scotland’s jewels are within easy reach. Loch Lomond is just 45 minutes drive, a little further to the Argyll peninsula – or over the sea to Arran, Skye, Iona and Mull.</p><p>There are top-ranking schools, excellent leisure facilities, beautiful golf courses and elegant accommodation across all price ranges. The Glasgow Dental Hospital and School</p><p>Glasgow Dental Hospital and School is situated in the centre of Glasgow. It is the main centre for specialist dental advice and treatment within the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board area. It also fulfils a similar role for surrounding Health Boards and serves a population of up to 3,000,000.</p><p>The total number of chairs within the hospital is approximately 160. It is an undergraduate dental teaching school and adjoins the Glasgow Dental Education Centre. There are strong links with the University of Glasgow and other hospitals in the region and it has an excellent library with on-line literature search facilities.</p><p>Glasgow Dental Hospital is part of the Oral Health Directorate, which sits within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.</p><p>Greater Glasgow &Clyde are currently constructing a state of the art acute hospital facility on the site of the Southern General Hospital. A new Childrens’ Hospital is part of this development, and paediatric dentistry services will be located at this site from 2015.</p><p>The Department of Paediatric Dentistry</p><p>The Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic Departments occupy a large area on the fifth floor of the tower block building in the Dental Hospital. The main clinic has 22 chairs which are flexibly utilized between the two specialties. In addition, there are side surgeries available for Paediatric Dentistry use. A sub-department of Oral Orthopaedics, dealing largely with cleft lip and palate patients, occupies a suite of two chairs adjacent to the main department, with its own waiting room and adjacent Speech Therapy Room. Office accommodation, production and teaching laboratories, postgraduate accommodation and seminar facilities are also available on the same floor. Computers and digitizing facilities are readily available. All staff have access to library and medical illustration facilities within the Dental Hospital.</p><p>In addition to activity at the Dental Hospital, all Consultants in the Department have clinical responsibilities at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) which is a tertiary referral centre for Scotland for the full range of paediatric specialties. In patient and day surgery general anaesthetic facilities are available in the theatre suite at RHSC and a two chair dental out-patient department with inhalation and radiography facilities is also on site. Consultants provide specialist cover at RHSC and Specialty Registrars and Senior House Officers (Core 1 and 2) rotate to RHSC.</p><p>The current functions of the Paediatric Dental Department are:-</p><p> a) To provide paediatric dental advice for referring practitioners from general dental practice and the community setting b) To provide specialist paediatric dental treatment. This is undertaken either by Consultants or under their direction. c) To provide a tertiary paediatric dental service for medically compromised children at RHSC. d) To teach basic paediatric dental skills to undergraduate students. The department is also heavily involved in training grade hospital staff, postgraduate specialists and community dental practitioners. </p><p>A full range of dental specialties is found within the Dental Hospital, and close collaboration exists with all departments but particularly Orthodontics, Oral Surgery and Restorative Dentistry. A number of multidisciplinary clinics are in existence with members from the Restorative, Orthodontic and Oral Surgery Departments, for example Hypodontia clinic; Paed/Ortho interface clinic; Cleft clinic; Craniofacial deformity clinic; Paediatric Oral Medicine Clinic. Line Management</p><p>The post holder is line managed by the Clinical Services Manager and is clinically responsible to the Lead Clinician for Paediatric Dentistry and the Clinical Director. </p><p>Staff in Paediatric Dentistry</p><p>NHS Consultants: </p><p>Dr A. Cairns (Senior Clinical University Teacher) </p><p>The Department also has a number of supporting specialist staff. </p><p>Duties of the Post</p><p>Clinical</p><p>The Consultant will provide a diagnostic, advisory and treatment service for patients referred to the Paediatric Dental Department at both Glasgow Dental Hospital and School and the RHSC and will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge. He/she will share with Consultant colleagues a responsibility for the proper functioning of the Department. The Consultant will contribute to the professional supervision and management of the training grade staff. There is a requirement to participate in audit.</p><p>It is anticipated that the holder of this post will have a minimum of 1 theatre session per week at RHSC, and will also be the lead for Oncology and Haematology service liaison.</p><p>As part of the extension of the paediatric clinical network, the post-holder may be required to provide consultant input to the treatment planning of patients at other sites within the health board area.</p><p>This post is currently available for 0.8 WTE sessions. A proposed Job Plan is attached.</p><p>Teaching & Training</p><p>The Paediatric Dental Department is one of the centres for specialist training in Scotland and one of the largest Paediatric Dental Departments in the UK.
