ROSEDALE HEIGHTS SCHOOL OF THE ARTS Grade 11, College Foundations for College Mathematics (College Preparation) MBF3C1

Course Description/Rationale/Overview: This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematics as a problem solving tool in the real world. Students will extend their understanding of quadratic relations; investigate exponential growth; solve problems involving compound interest; solve financial problems connected with vehicle ownership; develop their ability to reason by collecting, analyzing and evaluating data involving one variable; connect probability and statistics and solve problems in geometry and trigonometry. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.

1. Trigonometry (9 periods) 2. Quadratic Functions ( 18 periods) Primary trig ratios Expanding Binomials Using trig to find lengths and angles Factoring Simple Trinomials x – intercepts of a quadratic relation Problem solving using trig ratios Solving Problems Angles of elevation, depression, inclination Modeling with Quadratic Relations The sine law The Quadratic Relation, y = ax2 The cosine law The Quadratic Relation, y = ax2 + k Problem solving using laws (acute angles) The Quadratic Relation, y = a(x-h)2 Pulling it all together y = a(x-h)2 + k Interpret Graphs of Quadratic Relations

3. Exponential Functions ( 10 periods) 4. Finance ( 15 periods) Exponent Rules Simple and compound interest Zero and negative exponents Present Value Investigating exponential relationships Loans and investments (TVM or more practice) Exponential relations Savings & Investment Alternatives Modeling growth and decay (TI83) Credit Cards Solving Problems Buying & Operating a Vehicle 5. Probability ( 7 periods) 6. Statistics ( 10 periods) Probability Experiments Sampling Techniques Theoretical Probability Collect,Analyse and Display Data Measures of central tendency Compare Exp. and theoretical Measures of spread Interpret info involving probability Common Distributions 7. Geometry in Design (12 periods) Metric/Imperial Conversions - Polygons, Tessellations - Golden Ratio - Scale Models, Isometric, Isometric Perspective Drawings - Orthographic Drawings – Plans - Polyhedrons, Nets Scale Models - Solving Problems with Constraints Report Card Term Work Mid Term Final Final Mark Exam Evaluation November 100% 100% February 70% 30% 100% April (Interim) 80% 20% 100% June 60% 10% 30% 100%

ASSESMENTS STRATEGIES FINAL MARK

Quizzes Year’s Work: 70% Tests Final Summative Evaluation 30 % Assignments (such as homework) Group Work Technology Based Tasks Examinations

Late Assignments Late assignments must be accompanied with a note signed by a parent or guardian stating the reason for late submission. The note must list the due date of the assignment and the actual date of submission. If an assignment is handed in after it has been taken up/handed back, the student may not receive a mark for it.

Missed Tests It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements, ahead of time, for any tests/quizzes that are missed. If a student misses a test/quiz for an unforeseen reason such as illness, the student must bring a note signed by a parent or guardian and be prepared to write the test/quiz immediately upon return to school. ------Please return this section to your Mathematics Teacher

Student Name (print) ______

Student signature: ______Date: ______

Parent/Guardian signature: ______Date: ______
