Year 5 Survival Day

On Thursday 24th September, the Year 5s from St Nicholas school travelled to King Arthurs Secondary School to attend a survival day. On our arrival, we were taken to a science classroom and split into groups. I was with Jessie and three girls from Horsington School called Sophie, Lucy and Daisy and our group was called The Survivors! We were told our first activity was shelter building.

Each team was given eight long sticks, a large blue tarpaulin, some green string and scissors to build our shelters with. Our shelter was built up against a strong fence and secured with the string, using the sticks as the poles holding it up. After we finished building it, the teacher called Mr Chapman, handed everyone a flapjack and a bottle of water. Then it was time to go on to the next activity. The next thing we did was orienteering! Every team got a map of the school and then travelled around the building, searching for survival tips. Our team was second to finish and to get back to the science classroom. By then we had three points, which were marks that you got if you did good things.

Not long after, it was lunchtime, which lasted for half an hour.

After lunch, we went out onto the sports field to do problem solving activities and there were seven to get through. At the end, each leader gave a point to the group they felt worked best at their activity. In the middle of it, the weather poured down so we had to take cover in our shelters.

An hour later, we all returned to the science classroom. The leaders were counting up the points for each team- and the winning team would get a prize each! We all held our breath as Mr Chapman announced the winners… THE SURVIVOURS!!! We all cheered as we were each handed a WHSmith voucher.

It was a brilliant day and I had had a lovely time.

By Ellie Mitchell (Yr 5)
