<p> Safety Steering Committee 10/18/07</p><p>Members Present: Dave Jackson, Janiece Ford, Andy Cooper, Mona Dowiat, Dave Keely, Mike Valde, , Bethany Kaplan, Joe Brinson, Mark Nidey, Bob Cozine, Jeff Harney, Frank Janaszak, , Kate Kendall, Kerry Campbell, Tom Vine, Valerie RiChard</p><p>Dashboard and Safety Work Requests Report Report has new look; stats broken down to reflect each of the 6 units of FM .Trends are showing Investigations down, Lost days/Restrictions are up, First Reports are about the same Safety Work Requests: 28 total for the year, break down as follows: 1 no assign; 1 Plan in progress; 1 Work in progress; 17 Completed; 1 Canceled</p><p>Unit Reports:</p><p>Blue Team No report presented. Dave Keeley has report from Scott, he’ll send to committee members via e mail:</p><p>DCS: Visited John Deere International headquarters to look at their Contractor Safety Program. Found their program to be quite extensive and provides clear expectations of contractors that are on site. DCS Contractor Safety Program may partner w/Kirkwood to deliver. Any contractor or staff of contractor will be required to take this “orientation”, which will cover safety and compliance issues, as well as University policies. Concept has been presented to Sadie, work continues on an outline. Jeff also encourages anyone on committee with questions about safety issues on DCS projects to contact him directly with questions.</p><p>B&FS Working on workstation ergo assessments for all B&FS staff that are interested. This is one of unit’s quarterly goals.</p><p>Power Plant Will meet w/Diane Brown and Dave Jackson on 10/2. Completed Haz Mat walk down; dealt w/material left by contractors, gas containers; discussion of new Safety bulletin boards; Completed annual HPO audit; Currently doing annual hands on training of Respirator, Forklift and Fire Extinguisher, also looking at annual review of PPE policies. Announcements: 1.) As of 11/1/07, Burlington Street entrance, (North) will be permanently locked. Sign will be posted w/phone number to call. Expectation is that all parties that are coming to plant will have contacted the appropriate people to gain access. </p><p>2. Drill that will simulate a turbine fire will be held Monday, October 22 at 9am. Will test foam system, plant accountability, etc. IC Fire Dept and U of I Public Safety will respond.</p><p>O & M Participated in meeting w/Diane Brown/Shashi Patel. Valerie also reported a successful problem solving experience w/recycling issues at the Tennis Center. The custodial supervisor in this area was so impressed with the process that now she would like to have a Safety Team in her area</p><p>Landscape Services 4 staff from Landscape Services participated in sessions with Diane Brown/Shashi Patel. This committee continues to meet monthly; Working on completing job pre planning booklets for each task, per area. Also developing maintenance checklist for each piece of equipment. </p><p>AFSCME: Discussion of Backflow Valve standards. Andy will bring list of valves to Valerie. Frank shared photos of a modified tool for tile removal. Discussion of other possible uses for this tool. Discussion of importance of keeping up w/updating hand tools as well as power tools and larger equipment.</p><p>Current Topics of Importance: UMASS survey aggregate results reports distributed Discussion of Incident Investigations; 62 of 120 investigations have resulted in the recommendation “no action taken” This is very disappointing; we need to focus on the most effective solutions to hazards. The most effective is to eliminate the hazard which has been done in only 4 of 120 investigations. Kudos to Valerie for helping team at tennis center work to eliminate lifting hazard, also for helping get Incident Investigations caught up Discussion of intent of “2-4 investigators recommended for Incident Investigations” This is a guideline only, not a rule. Managers can fill out forms for simple/non serious injuries working just with the injured person. Discussion injury statistics; Custodial is the “face of injuries” as that department comprises the majority of injuries. Amount of lost time due to injuries is equal to 5 full time staff for 1 year.
