<p> PRR 475 Evaluation in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Fall Semester 1999 Week #1 – Exercise 1</p><p>1. Tour of Microsoft Windows 95 This is an excellent way to learn the basics of using Microsoft Windows 95. Double-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop. Click the down arrow to the right of Network Neighborhood. Select Root on ‘Mlabafs’ (U:). Double-click the msu.edu folder (the 4th one down) to open it. Double-click the course folder to open it. Double-click the PRR folder to open it. Double-click the 475 folder to open it. Double-click the tour folder to open it. Double-click the Tour.exe icon to load the tour of Microsoft Windows 95. Follow the directions on the screen to work through the tour and then exit.</p><p>2. What are the PILOT Email System and the AFS File System? This will explain how to set-up and use PILOT and AFS. Click the Start button on the bottom left side of the desktop. Use your mouse to highlight Programs. Highlight Net Apps. Click Netscape Navigator. Highlight the text in the location box near the top of the screen, and then type www.msu.edu. Click Library & Tech. Click Pilot and AFS. Click on the various links shown on this page to read about PILOT and AFS. Follow the instructions to set up your PILOT account if you have not already done so. Note: Each student receives 3 MB of space for incoming e-mail and 5 MB of AFS space for web pages, storing files, mail folders, etc.</p><p>3. Using the public folder in your personal AFS space This will explain how to access and use the public folder in your personal AFS space. Double-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop. Click the down arrow to the right of Network Neighborhood. Select Homes on’Mlabafs’ (P:). Double-click the public folder to open it. Any files that you have saved to P:\public will be listed here. Note: Anyone can edit or copy the files you have saved here. This is a good way to share files while working on a group project.</p><p>4. Accessing someone else’s public folder in AFS space This will explain how to share files with someone else by accessing their personal AFS space. Double-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop. Click the down arrow to the right of Network Neighborhood. Select Root on Mlabafs (U:). Double-click the user folder to open it. Double-click the initial of the person’s last name (i.e. M for Martin). Double-click the second letter of the person’s last name (i.e. A for Martin). Double-click that person’s pilot email name (i.e. marti362 for Lori Martin). Any files that person has saved to their public folder will be listed here. Note: Anyone can edit or copy the files saved in a public folder. These files may be saved to a floppy disk or to personal AFS space. 5. Using Magic to search for books and journals in the MSU Libraries Click the Start button on the bottom left side of the desktop. Use your mouse to highlight Programs. Highlight Net Apps. Click Netscape Navigator. Highlight the text in the location box near the top of the screen, and then type www.msu.edu. Click Library & Tech. Click MSU Libraries Databases and Electronic Journals. Click Magic. Click Words or Author to begin a search. Note: You can use Magic from any computer with Internet access.</p><p>6. Using ProQuest Direct to search for on-line journal articles Click the Start button on the bottom left side of the desktop. Use your mouse to highlight Programs. Highlight Net Apps. Click Netscape Navigator. Highlight the text in the location box near the top of the screen, and then type www.msu.edu. Click Library & Tech. Click MSU Libraries Databases and Electronic Journals. Press the Page Down key, and then click ProQuest Direct. Type your pilot name (i.e. marti362) and password in the box that pops up. Click by word or for publication to begin a search. When you’ve located articles of interest you may e-mail them to yourself or someone else, save them, or print them. Note: You can use ProQuest Direct from any computer with Internet access.</p><p>7. View the home page for PRR 475 Click the Start button on the bottom left side of the desktop. Use your mouse to highlight Programs. Highlight Net Apps. Click Netscape Navigator. Highlight the text in the location box near the top of the screen, and then type www.msu.edu/course/prr/475/web/. Read and browse the data and links on this page. It will be periodically updated. Check it regularly.</p><p>8. MSU Computer Based Training This is an introduction to web-based computer training from MSU. Click the Start button on the bottom left side of the desktop. Use your mouse to highlight Programs. Highlight Net Apps. Click Netscape Navigator. Highlight the text in the location box near the top of the screen, and then type http://cbtraining.msu.edu/cbtweb/index.htm. Click on comprehensive index to see a list of computer software with on-line training available. Use these training modules to familiarize yourself with software such as Microsoft Office 97. Note: These computer classes may be used from any computer with Internet access. 9. Customizing your Desktop in Micro-labs MSU has added a new feature to labs that lets you customize the desktop and keep your own bookmarks for Netscape in labs. </p><p> a. First, you must create subdirectories in your AFS space (if they do not already exist). Using Windows explorer, go to your AFS space on p drive. Choose File, New Folder</p><p>First create a folder called win95 (all lower case) Then select this folder and create two subfolders using same procedure Netscape Desktop</p><p>Final directory structure should look something like this</p><p> public web win95 Desktop Netscape</p><p> b. Netscape folder - may copy a bookmark file to here to save your own bookmarks in Navigator -- bookmark.htm c. Desktop folder - put shortcuts here</p><p>1. Put shortcut to PRR 475 Course AFS space. Open win95/Desktop folder on p drive in Windows Explorer Open PRR475 AFS folder on U drive - must navigate down from root - msu/course/prr/475 Select PRR475 folder on U, Drag with right mouse button to p: Desktop folder and select Create shortcut here</p><p>2. Put shortcut to Netscape on desktop Open win95/Desktop on p drive Right click Start button on task bar, Select explore In left window double click Start menu, then Programs, then NetApps In right window of files choose Netscape Navigator Using right mouse button, drag Netscape icon to win95/Desktop folder - Create a COPY , not shortcut</p><p>3. Put shortcut to Excel on desktop : Same procedure as above Open win95/Desktop on p drive Right click Start button on task bar, Select explore In left window double click Start menu, then Programs, then MSOffice In right window of files choose Excel (or any other you wish to have shortcut for ) Using right mouse button, drag Netscape icon to win95/Desktop folder - Create a COPY , not shortcut</p><p>These features should take effect the next time you log on. </p>
