Catalog Description: Studies how children acquire and process information using Brain-based learning research. Students apply the knowledge of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, the PA Early Learning Standards, the PDE Standard Aligned System, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) guidelines to develop strategies that engage children in the learning process. Students plan a classroom environment that supports development and learning for children Pre K- grade 4 and use an integrated approach to lesson planning by incorporating learning experiences from all content areas throughout the curriculum. Creating lesson plans that contain developmentally appropriate learning opportunities and support and conform to model SAS planning (including big ideas, essential questions, and developing learning outcomes that support standards, etc.) is an integral part of the course. Ten (10) hours of observation are required. Minimum Grade Required 3. Plan, develop, implement, and assess a curriculum based upon students’ stage of cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional development 2. Discuss how students acquire and process information at different developmental stages 3. Defend the provision of learning experiences that take into account multiple influences on student learning and development 4. Develop program goals, learning outcomes, activities, and assessments of learning and be able to integrate all of the content areas: science, math, social science, arts, and language arts 5. Develop skills in observing and documenting the exploration, play, and learning of children 6. Implement instruction that is meaningful, integrated, culturally-appropriate, and challenging for groups and individuals 7. Use a constructivist approach to plan and implement learning experiences 8. Practice developmentally appropriate communication techniques with children through the use of questioning based upon Bloom’s taxonomy 9. Discuss Vygotksy’s socio-cultural theory of development and learning with emphasis on the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and scaffolding 10. Describe how the prepared classroom environment facilitates learning 11. Conduct project-based learning congruent with the NAEYC and PA Early Learning Standards 12. Compare and contrast thematic-based planning and project-based planning 13. Identify the importance of exploration and play in the learning process 14. Plan adaptations for individual ability level, cultural differences, learning styles, and varying interests of children</p><p>5.
