<p>Grade 2 Information Access – Literature Appreciation PPS Information Literacy for Life Long Learning: 3.2 Orienting Students to Use the Library and its Resources 4.1 Encourage Reading and the Love of Literature</p><p>Materials Needed – Enough picture books from the Arthur Adventures series by Marc Brown for half of a class. “Five Finger” Bookmarks (available from Upstart)</p><p>SWBAT – explain that fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. - demonstrate the “Five Finger Test” for selecting an appropriate book to read independently. - locate a picture book from the leveled readers carousel and display - locate a picture book whose author’s last name has the same beginning two letters as the student’s last name - find at least two hidden names (Tolon, Tucker, Eliza, Laurie) in a picture book by Marc Brown.</p><p>Week 1: Teacher Librarian explains the value of choosing a book that can be read independently. The “Five Finger Rule” is explained and demonstrated. (Students read one page from the book, raising one finger each time they encounter a word on that page that they can’t read. If five fingers go up before the page is finished, the book is too difficult. If only two or three fingers go up, it is an appropriate challenge.) Students then select books from a designated area, return to seats and begin reading quietly, using 5 Finger Rule Bookmarks.</p><p>Week 2: T-L reviews Five Finger Rule and location of leveled readers. T-L explains that fiction books are arranged alphabetically according to the authors’ last names. T-L locates a book on the shelf with the same first two letters of her/his last name. Students are challenged to do the same. As each student goes to the shelves, they tell the T-L what letters they are looking for. After they have successfully found the desired letter, they can select their book for borrowing.</p><p>Week 3: T-L reviews Five Finger Rule, location of leveled readers, and alphabetical arrangement of fiction books by authors’ last names. The book Arthur’s Family Vacation by Marc Brown is read aloud. T-L explains that Marc Brown wrote all the Arthur stories. Where would these books be found? T-L explains that Marc Brown hides the names of his family (Tolon, Tucker, Eliza, Laurie) in the illustrations of his books. Students are paired up with various Arthur books and challenged to see how many of the four names they can find.
