Introduction to Management

MT 140

Unit 4 Assignment

Billy Williams

[email protected] Question 1:

How would creating a new coordinating position between the CEO and location managers help

the business to grow?

Answer 1:

The Sandwich Blitz organization has grown as far as it can without engaging a major project to

investigate the best process for a major expansion. In order to accomplish this, the job function

that Dalman and Lei have been performing since the start of the company, daily operations,

should be assigned to a job position called Daily Operations Manager. This job would be in

charge of the day to day operations of the stores. Each of the store managers would report to

this new position. This person will take on the day to day duties in managing the stores that

Dalman and Lei had been performing. This will free up Dalman and Lei so that they can

concentrate on building the business.

Question 2:

Is promoting an existing manager the best option to fill this position? If not, what is an

alternative source to till the position?

Answer 2:

The decision on whether to promote one of the store managers or to hire someone from the

outside is not an easy one. Each option has advantages and disadvantages. If you promote one

of the store managers, you gain the advantage of someone who is already familiar with the day

to day operations. Unless this person has also had previous experience at this type of management, you won’t be introducing any new ideas to the organization. In order to do this ,

you would need to hire someone from the outside. Though this person may not be familiar with

the product line, new management ideas could be introduced into the organization. New ideas

could help the organization run more efficiently. Someone who has experience managing a

large team over a large geographic area, some training experience and finance experience is the

type of person, whether it be internal or external, is the type of person needed for this job.

Question 3:

Who within the company should make these decisions?

Answer 3:

This decision should be made by Dalman and Lei for two reasons. The first one is that the

Daily Operations Manager will report directly to Dalman and Lei. The second one is that this

new person will take over the job duties currently being handled by Dalman and Lei. The new

person will need to get an idea from them on how they have been handling the day to day

operations and incorporate any ideas that he may have. When a job duty is delegated from one

person to another, the person that is deleting the job and the person taking over the job must be

in agreement on how it should be handled.

Question 4:

List the levels of authority (management) that Sandwich Blitz Inc would have if the new

position is created.

Answer 4:

Top Level Management CEO – Dalman

CFO – Lei

Middle Level Management

Account – reporting to Dalman and Lei

Daily Operations Manager – reporting to Dalman and Lei

First Line Management

Store Managers – reporting to Daily Operations Manager

Team Leads – reporting to Store Managers

Customer Associate – reporting to Team Leads.
