<p>Notes for 10th Class</p><p>ON BOARD:</p><p> o Up for Thurs.: </p><p>. workshop Jason, Brianna, Monica, Micah; . talk briefly as a group about tonite’s workshop people (who will be critiqued tonite on blog)</p><p> o Get out and have ready for tonite’s class:</p><p>. Class flash fiction samples from last week . Poems by Bishop: “Giant Snail,” “The Fish”; Neruda, “Ode to My Socks,” Simic, “Fork”; Edson, all; Merwin, all.</p><p> o Frost:</p><p>When I see birches bend to left and right Across the line of straighter, darker trees, I like to think some boy’s been swinging them[…] Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust—</p><p> o Old English:</p><p>In a summer season when soft was the sun I shaped me in shrouds as a shepherd I were In habit as a hermit unholy of works Went wide in this world wonders to hear</p><p> o Sestina form: see sheet; put scheme up</p><p>Look over the flash pieces we did last week.</p><p>Poetry project: try to do three of the options; if you have trouble, then write anything.</p><p>TRADITIONAL FORM OPTIONS: </p><p>Lots in packet; we’ll just touch on tonite.</p><p>Music in language:  various forms of rhyme, including assonance, alliteration, slant rhyme, etc. (we can look at samples as we read student’s work and other stuff in class)  rhythm and patterns of stress and/or syllables o Importance: AMazing stuDENTS at north DAKota-state o syllabics: haiku (white trash samples) o meter samples (Old English, then Frost)</p><p>Traditional stanza forms: </p><p>Mention sonnets and villanelles: beauty of repetition and music; read Bishop? Sestinas: (go over in more detail): Bishop and Justice</p><p>Free verse: kinds of patterns and music. Anaphor (see “I Am Waiting for a Rebirth of Wonder”) and then Do Gluck lineation exercise.</p><p>DESCRIPTION AND LOOKING OPTIONS:</p><p>Luminous Object, Part 1: LOOKING CLOSELY. Describe one of the objects for awhile, then read Bishop poem: Fish poem. Go back to objects and LOOK AGAIN.</p><p>Defamiliarize object; make luminous. “Giant Snail,” (recall student poem from deer’s perspective and “branch that barks”), “Ode to Socks,” and “Fork.”</p><p>Totally surreal: Edson, Merwin. Ads, surrealist visual samples. Pass around thesaurus sheets.</p><p>Critique Cassie, Angela, and Isaac on team blog.
