Name: Cassidy Ford

Thesis Director: Dr. Joan Supplee, History Department

Course: UNSC 4101 (Senior Thesis)

Current Date: January 29, 2009

Las presidentas y la prensa: The Role of the Media in the Administrations of

Michelle Bachelet and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner

For my senior thesis project, I have chosen to study the role of the media in the

administrations of the two current female presidents in Latin America, President Michelle

Bachelet of Chile and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina. My goal is

to compare both the use of the press by each woman and the treatment of each presidenta

by the press, in order to discover the effect of the media concerning women in politics in

Latin America. The timeline for this project is as follows:

- Chapter 1: Statement of Question and Literature December 1, 2008 Review (20 pages) - Chapter 2: Background on Chile and Argentina February 10, 2009 - Chapter 3: Michelle Bachelet - Chapter 4: Cristina Fernández April 1, 2009 - Chapter 5: Conclusion (Complete Draft) April 25, 2009 - Submission of Final Draft

The first chapter will consist of the statement of question and the review of

literature pertinent to the project, including any absences of research and writing on the

topic. Another important component of the first chapter will be an explanation of traditional media analysis, and how I will use that in my work to examine the relationship between Bachelet, Fernández, and the press.

Chapter Two will deal with contextual information. Presidents Bachelet and

Fernández lead two very different countries, and knowledge of the current and historical cultural and political backgrounds of Chile and Argentina will be key to understanding the presidencies of both women. This chapter will address historical events which are important to the current leadership, as well as the events which led up to the election of

Bachelet and Fernández.

Chapters Three and Four will deal specifically with each presidenta. I will provide documentation of articles, press releases, radio and television coverage, etc. and offer an analysis of the role the media in each woman’s administration. I plan to conduct an informal survey among Chilean and Argentine citizens to assess public opinion of each president. While this survey will not be scientific, it will offer me personal insight into the overall situations in Chile and Argentina and will provide me with the opportunity to interview citizens who have been directly affected by the administrations.

Finally, Chapter Five concludes the thesis project. I will offer my final analysis of the role of the media in the administrations of Michelle Bachelet and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, and what, if any, significance this holds for future presidentas.
