(AL,SC,NC,TN,FL)  Know the number of counties in GA 159  Know the definition of Geography – science of studying the earth and its people  Know the difference between relative location and absolute location Absolute-30 to 35 degrees N latitude, 80-85 degrees W longitude Relative – where GA is compared to other places (N,S,E,W) o Know the difference between weather & climate o Know that Georgia’s climate usually consists of hot, humid summers and mild winters. The mild winters are one of the reasons many people move here. o Know that GA is made up of 5 physiographic regions. Know the following facts about each region: o Appalachian Plateau- contains Lookout MTN. o Ridge & Valley- located between the two mountainous regions o Blue Ridge – Highest & largest mountain ranges Receives the most precipitation o Piedmont- rich, red clay soil contains the state capital – Atlanta contains the majority of the state’s population o Coastal Plain- best weather and soil for agriculture Contains the Okefenokee Swamp:world’s largest inland swamp Largest region in land size o Know about the fall line- it separates the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. It has waterfalls which provide a power source for the communities around it. o Know that the barrier islands protect GA’s mainland by blocking much of the wind & water that could cause erosion. o Know about GA’s Transportation Systems and that they provide many jobs for Georgians by allowing goods & people to move throughout the state. o GA’s Interstate Highways were first built to help move military throughout the state. o Hartsfield Jackson International Airport is the state’s largest employer and provides a continued boost to the state’s economy by bringing more visitors into the state. o Georgia’s deepwater ports open the state for trade with the world.</p>
