<p> Regiopolis Notre-Dame Catholic High School GRADE TEN ACADEMIC SCIENCE: Course Outline</p><p>TEACHER: Mr. Graham COURSE CODE: SNC 2D1</p><p>Prerequisite: SNC 1D Credit Value: 1.0 Textbook: Nelsons Science Perspectives 10</p><p>EVALUATION: For details see the Assessment and Evaluation Guideline. </p><p>TERM = 70% Formative evaluations (quizzes, homework checks, etc.) will occur on a daily basis. Summative evaluations (tests, labs, assignments, projects) take place on a weekly basis. </p><p>FINAL = 30% Culminating activities occur during each of the four units of study. Combined, these projects are worth 10% of the final mark. The final exam is worth 20% of the final mark and will occur at the end of term.</p><p>UNITS OF STUDY:</p><p>UNIT 1 CHEMISTRY: Chemical Reactions Students will analyze a variety of safety and environmental issues associated with chemical reactions including applications to address environmental challenges, investigate the characteristics of chemical reactions, demonstrate an understanding of the general principals of chemical reactions, and various ways to represent them.</p><p>UNIT 2 BIOLOGY: Systems of Living Things Students will demonstrate an understanding of hierarchies in biology, investigate cell division, specialization, and structure and function of tissues, organs and organ systems in plant and animal kingdoms. They will consider social, ethical and ecological implications of biological and biomedical advancements in this multidisciplinary field of study. </p><p>UNIT 3 PHYSICS: Light and Geometric Optics Students will evaluate the effectiveness of technological devices and procedures designed to make use of light and assess their social benefits, investigate the properties of light and predict its behavior with respect to reflection in plane and curved mirrors and refraction in converging lenses, demonstrate an understanding of various characteristics and properties of light particularly with respect to reflection in mirrors and reflection and refraction in lenses. </p><p>UNIT 4 EARTH & SPACE SCIENCE: Climate Change Students will analyze some of the effects of climate change around the world, assess the effectiveness of initiatives that attempt to address the issue, investigate and demonstrate an understanding of natural and human factors that influence Earth=s climate and contribute to climate change. SNC2D1 - 2013</p><p>Expectations and Responsibilites:</p><p>1. Be on time, prepared and ready for class.</p><p>2. If you are absent from class for any reason other than a School Related Activity (Sports, Drama, etc.) please have a parent or guardian notify the attendance office. If a call is not received by the attendance office, you should expect a call home.</p><p>3. Students are expected to bring to class each day their notebook kept up to date, their textbook, a pencil, eraser, ruler, and a scientific calculator. </p><p>4. Respect yourself and all others.</p><p>5. Treat the equipment with care.</p><p>6. Apply yourself to complete daily homework assignments and major assignments, labs and projects on time. If you are having difficulty, seek help.</p><p>7. If you miss some class time, it is your responsibility to catch up promptly. Help is available!</p><p>8. Most lab activities will be done in partners, however, each person will be expected to submit their own report. It is understood that both partners will have collected the same data, but the analysis and explanation of the findings must be each individuals own work. If work is deemed to be plagiarized, penalties will include dividing the single mark among those involved. </p><p>9. You are expected to write the unit test with your class on the scheduled day. There will be NO post written tests. </p><p>If you have an important conflict and will be unable to attend, let your teacher know in advance to pre-arrange a test time – the test is to be written before the absence. </p><p>Have your parent or guardian phone the attendance office before 8:30 am on the test day if you are not going to be present due to illness or other unexpected legitimate problem. You will be required to complete the missed test and hand it in as an assignment.
