Names ______Date ______Period ______

Boyle’s Law Simulation Lab

1. Log on to a computer, and go to http://phet.colorado.edu/simulations/sims.php? sim=Gas_Properties (This is the same website I used in class as a demonstration.) 2. Below the picture, click “Run Now”

T

Tape your “Amount of Gas” piece here!

3. Before starting the simulation: a. In the “Constant Parameter” box, click “Temperature” b. Click the “Measurement Tools” box, and select “Ruler” c. Use the handle on the side of the gas chamber, to adjust the side of the gas chamber to “1 nm” (You may find it helpful to use a piece of paper as a straight edge ) 4. Pump your group’s assigned number of particles into the gas chamber. It is important that you follow your instructions to compare data later! 5. Now you will begin using the handle on the side of the gas chamber to adjust the volume. Use the data table below as a guide, and record the necessary information:

nm on Ruler Volume* (mL) Pressure (atm) Volume = 10 – nm on Ruler The pressure value will be “jumpy”…watch the pressure reading for 30 seconds, and write the value that it jumps back to most often! 1.0 nm 9.0 mL 2.0 nm 8.0 mL 3.0 nm 7.0 mL 4.0 nm 6.0 mL 5.0 nm 5.0 mL 6.0 nm 4.0 mL 7.0 nm 3.0 mL

*Boyle’s law studies the relationship between the volume and pressure of a gas. The formula “10 – nm on Ruler” will allow you to treat the ruler more like the graduations on a syringe.
