During the Second Semester, Fifth Grade Students Will Deepen Their Understanding of Decimals

<p> 5 th Grade Math 2 nd Semester</p><p>During the second semester, fifth grade students will deepen their understanding of decimals through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will begin to explore the idea of volume, and then apply their understanding to the formula to find volume. They will also engage in activities relating to measurement and displaying data. </p><p>This chart provides an overview of the topics along with examples that we will be covering during this fourth nine weeks. Additional skills may be added or adjusted in response to the needs of individual students. </p><p>Vocabulary will include but is not limited to:</p><p>Base Line Plot Prefixes: Data Liter Kilo Dividend Meter Hecto Divisor Metric Deca Factors Prism Deci Gram Product Centi Heighth Quotient Milli Hundredth Volume Length Width</p><p>Major topic/concept Example</p><p>- Decimal Concepts</p><p>Students will recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left. They will also read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths and use place value understanding to round decimals to any place. - Adding/Subtracting Decimals</p><p>Students will add and subtract decimal numbers using concrete models or drawings based on place value as well as the standard algorithms for addition and subtraction.</p><p>- Multiplying Decimals </p><p>Students will multiply using visual models and strategies developed throughout the year. They will connect the strategies used in whole number multiplication and apply it to decimal multiplication.</p><p>- Dividing Decimals</p><p>Students will divide using visual models and strategies developed throughout the year. They will connect the strategies used in whole number division and apply it to decimal division.</p><p>Volume</p><p>Students will measure volume by counting unit cubes, using cubic cm, cubic in, cubic ft, and improvised units. Apply the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h for rectangular prisms to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole-number edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.</p><p>Students will calculate the volume of composite figures by either adding two rectangular prisms together or by subtracting a missing prism from the whole.</p><p>- Line Plots</p><p>Students will make a line plot to display data. This plot will include unit fractions. They will then perform operations using this information.</p><p>- Measurement Conversions</p><p>Students will convert different standard measurement units within a given measurement system. </p><p>They will use this information to solve multi- step, real world problems. </p>
