East Ridge High School

Agriscience Foundations Course 2014 – 2015

Instructor: Cori Holton

Contact Information Email: [email protected] Phone: 352-242-2080 ext. 2637 Classroom Lab Fee $25 (all students)

This class is a yearlong agriscience class. During this time we will be covering several agriculture topics. The agriculture instruction will include both classroom and hands-on laboratory activities. Our facilities include a woodworking shop, metal working shop, 2 gardens, aquaculture tank, aquariums, a greenhouse, a shade house and 3 acre land lab with livestock animals.

Because of the high expense of the hands-on projects, it will be necessary for each student to pay a $25 lab fee. All of these projects are great learning experiences and lot of fun for the students, so it is my hope that every student will want to participate. Payments need to be made as soon as possible so that materials may be ordered.

FFA Membership $35 (Includes lab fee, but is optional)

Your child has the opportunity to join the agriscience student organization called the FFA. FFA’s mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. Through FFA activities, members have the opportunity to practice what they are learning in the classroom in real-life situations and to develop leadership skills. An FFA member may run for an office, try out for Career Development Events (contests), attend regular monthly meetings, participate in social events, show projects at the Lake County Fair, participate in leadership workshops, and attend the State and National Conventions (members must meet requirements to attend the convention). We have a very active chapter here at East Ridge High School and average around 70 student members each year.

FFA dues are $35.00 for the entire school year and include the lab fee. The $35 covers the cost of local, state and national dues as well as the lab fee for the agriscience class and a ERHS FFA T-Shirt. As part of the dues, you will also receive a year subscription to the National FFA magazine. Your child may join at any time during the year. Students are encouraged to join FFA at the beginning of the year to get the most benefit from the organization.

Payments can be cash or check. If paying with a check, make it out to East Ridge High School.

If you have any questions, please call me at 242-2080 ext.2637 or email [email protected]

Sincerely, Cori Holton

This course is designed to develop competencies in the areas of agricultural history and the global impact of agriculture; career opportunities; scientific and research concepts; biological and physical science principles; environmental principles; agriscience safety; principles of leadership; and agribusiness, employability, and human relations skills in agriscience.
