Credits: School Name: Barren County ATC Program: Construction Carpentry KY Tech Course Name: Introduction to Construction Teacher: James Spence and Lab</p><p>KCTCS Course Number(s) KCTCS Course Name(s) College Credits 460201 CAR126 - Introduction to Construction CAR127 - Lab</p><p>Prerequisite(s): NONE</p><p>Course Description This lecture/lab discusses the different employment opportunities of carpentry related careers within the construction industry. This course will discuss different construction systems and methods as well as basic management of a construction project. This course will emphasize the different building materials and the correct use of hand and power tools. Shop and job site safety will be discussed and implemented.</p><p>Materials Used Textbook: Glencoe Carpentry and Building Construction Objectives 1. Identify the proper use of personal protection equipment and general job safety. 2. Identify and use various types of building materials. 3. Identify and use various types of fasteners, anchors, and adhesives used in the construction industry. 4. Identify the actual and nominal sizes of lumber. 5. Perform mathematics functions as related to tasks being performed. 6. Demonstrate the safe and proper use of the following types of hand tools: fastening devices, layout and measuring devices, leveling devices, edge cutting devices, etc. 7. Demonstrate the safe and proper use of the following types of portable power tools: various saws, surfacing and shaping tools, drills, pneumatic tools, etc. 8. Demonstrate the safe and proper use of the following stationary power tools: various saws, drill press, surface and shaping tools, drills, pneumatic tools, etc. 9. Build a project using tools of the trade: sawhorse, shop bench, tool box picnic table.</p><p>Grading Grades will be based on an average of the mean scores on quizzes, projects, and daily grades. *Courses with grades of less than a “C” will not count toward a certificate or be eligible for dual credit.</p><p>Procedures for Makeup Work/Tests Make up work will not be allowed for unexcused absences. Student shall request makeup work and have it completed and turned in within one week of return to class. </p><p>Attendance Policy/Withdrawal Policy There is a lot of information to be presented. Students are expected to attend and be punctual. In the event the student misses all or part of a class he or she will be expected to make up that days assignment. Withdrawals from class will be handled by the High School. Unless I am notified by the High School, you are still enrolled and responsible for your assignments. Without proper eye protection, students will not be allowed to work in the shop area.
