<p>By: Moncrief S.R. No. 564 SENATE RESOLUTION</p><p>WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pleasure in congratulating Hubert W. Hodges of Fort Worth on the grand occasion of his 100th birthday; and</p><p>WHEREAS, A native of Bell County, Texas, Mr. Hodges was born on March 30, 1895, and moved with his family to Roby when he was seven years old; he graduated salutatorian of his senior class in June, 1913, and continued his education at Simmons College; during his junior year, he left college to teach in a rural area; and</p><p>WHEREAS, After volunteering for the United States Army on July 18, 1917, at the age of 22, he was sent to Fort Worth and was stationed with the 36th Division, Company C, 111th Engineers at Camp Bowie for one year; and</p><p>WHEREAS, He was sent to France in July, 1918, where he saw combat in Saint Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne, remaining there until the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918; and</p><p>WHEREAS, After his discharge at Camp Bowie on June 16, 1919, Mr. Hodges returned to Roby and became principal of the high school for two years; for the next three years he homesteaded in Colorado with four other men; and</p><p>WHEREAS, When the depression came, Mr. Hodges went to work for the Works Progress Administration program office as certifying officer in Sweetwater before resuming his teaching again in Sardis; and</p><p>WHEREAS, Hubert Wilson Hodges married Lillie Sue Melton, a schoolteacher from Electra, Texas, on June 25, 1935, and the devoted couple enjoyed a long and happy life together until her death on April 2, 1987; and</p><p>WHEREAS, In 1937, Mr. Hodges began working for the Texas Employment Commission in Big Spring until he was transferred to Fort Worth in 1940; he remained a valued and respected auditor until his retirement on April 1, 1960; and</p><p>WHEREAS, An esteemed resident of the Retirement Inn, Mr. Hodges is truly deserving of the long and happy life with which he has been blessed; now, therefore, be it</p><p>RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere birthday greetings with many happy returns to Hubert Hodges on his 100th birthday; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the beloved centenarian as a memento of this exceptional milestone in his life.</p><p>______President of the Senate</p><p>I hereby certify that the above Resolution was adopted by the Senate on March 28, 1995.</p><p>______Secretary of the Senate</p><p>______Member, Texas Senate</p>
