<p> MINI-LESSON FOCUS: Word Study- Roots in Multiple Contexts READING CATEGORY SUPPORT: Cognition RESOURCE: The Young Voyageur by Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler Objective: ELA Scos- 1.01, 1.03, 1.04, 2.09 Materials: The Young Voyageur, dictionaries</p><p>Mini-Lesson: </p><p>After reading the selection refocus student’s attention on p. 13, “coureurs du bois”, in paragraph two. Discuss how the courier mail system works at Pitt County Schools. Elicit responses from students about how the meanings of the two terms are similar. Examine the root of each to establish kinship between the two words as your example for the next activity. Direct students to p. 9, “portage”, in paragraph one. Brainstorm a list of words that use”port” as a part. (transport, seaport, portable, carport, etc.) Discuss the meanings of these words and come to a class consensus on the meaning of “port.” Use the dictionary to check the definition. Allow students to work in pairs for a timed five minute dictionary search for more words that use port as a base. (portal, portcullis, porter, portfolio, portmanteau, etc.) Come back together as a class and discuss the new words and determine if “port” is used in the same way as our original word, portage. Add appropriate words to our brainstorm list. </p><p>Follow-Up: </p><p>Assign small groups word parts such as terra, bio, sub, poly, etc. Allow use of dictionaries to find meanings and examples to create another related word group for student notes. This can also be done creatively in word tree drawings , etc.</p>
