WALLACE, NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER March 20, 2010 12:00 AM

The skies above Lompoc will be aglow with the rocket's red glare on July 4th, after a sizeable donation saved the annual fireworks display from cancellation.

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians Foundation has donated $20,000 to the city of Lompoc to help fund the Independence Day fireworks show this year.

"The 4th of July Fireworks show is an important event for the city of Lompoc and its community members," said Vincent Armenta, tribal chairman, in a statement. "We're pleased to provide the funding needed to keep the long-standing tradition of the fireworks show in Lompoc."

The celebration has been in peril the past few years because of its cost. Last year, the city council voted to cut funding for the July 4th event as it tried to balance its budget. But a cadre of community members and churches was able to quickly raise the funds needed to make sure the show took place.

"The fireworks alone are a huge cost for a small community like ours," said Joanne Plummer, recreation manager for the Lompoc Parks and Recreation Department. "This contribution from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians allows us to guarantee our community a celebration this year and the opportunity to begin planning for next year as well."

The fireworks show is held at Huyck Stadium at Lompoc High School. Thousands of people pay to attend the show inside the stadium, sitting in lawn chairs and on blankets as both a ground show and aerial display are performed. The show begins at 5 p.m. on the holiday, and the field is also filled with game booths for children and food. There will be competitions such as the limbo and hula hoop.

Many other community members line the town's main thoroughfare, H Street, to watch the sky- high show only.

The approximately 25-minute fireworks show is set to music. Tickets for the event will be on sale starting in June at the Anderson Recreation Center.
