Trout Unlimited with 140

Trout unlimited with 140.000 members across the US have now waded in on the save our salmon battle: ------

Trout Unlimited 419 Sixth Street, Suite 200 Juneau, AK 99801

April 20, 2009

To: The Fisheries Minister The Honourable Gail Shea and Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia

As North America’s largest coldwater fisheries conservation organization with over 140,000 members across the United States who volunteer hundreds of thousands of hours each year to protect and restore wild fish and their habitat, we are truly concerned as we watch multinational salmon feedlot operations undermine the health and integrity of wild Pacific salmon and steelhead stocks off of British Columbia’s Coast. Given that North America's Pacific salmon and steelhead stocks already face innumerable threats, wild Pacific salmon and steelhead cannot afford another threat.

That is why we can no longer stand by and watch silently as this new salmon crisis unfolds. We have begun to call on our legions of advocates to voice their support for the protection of British Columbia’s wild salmon and steelhead stocks before it is too late. Attached is a list of 360 people who share either a coastline or a salmon migration (eg, Idaho) with British Columbia and have signed the very same letter that Alexandra Morton submitted to you weeks ago, demanding that Fisheries and Oceans Canada apply the Fisheries Act to British Columbia’s farmed salmon industry. Each of these signatures is in support of Alexandra Morton’s letter and her efforts to bring about proper protection for British Columbia’s wild salmon and steelhead. All 360 of these names are watching, waiting for a response and some action to be made. If there is any support that we can offer you in your efforts to apply the Fisheries Act to British Columbia’s farmed salmon industry and ensure that these mismanaged operations no longer threaten our irreplaceable wild salmon and steelhead, we are at your service.

Thanks for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Dubovsky WhyWild Program Director [email protected] 907.321.7221

CC: Alexandra Morton
