Stanbury Hill, Bingley Moor

Stanbury Hill Project

Stanbury Hill Community Archaeology Project Public meeting Eldwick Memorial Hall Saturday, September 20th, 10.30.a.m.

Rock art Burial cairn

On Stanbury Hill, which is part of Bingley Moor, only a few miles from Bingley town centre, is a concentration of prehistoric rock art or ‘cup-and-ring-marked’ rocks, at least 6 burial cairns and lines of prehistoric walling. Flint tools have also been found on the hill. All these remains are believed to date from the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, i.e. about 2500BC. The Stanbury Hill Project has been set up between the Bingley and District Local History Society and the University of Bradford to investigate these remains over the next few years, using surveying, sampling and excavation. The project is an excellent opportunity for members of the public like yourself to get involved, not only in archaeology, but also in discovering about the prehistoric past in your own area. If you are interested in finding out more about the project, or would like to help out in some way, please come along to the public meeting at Eldwick Memorial Hall on Saturday, 20th September, at 10.30 a.m. The Hall is fully wheelchair accessible.

For more information, see also the Bingley and District Local History Society web-site at: http://www.bingleyhistory.co.uk or contact: Dr. K.
