NDOLAURBAN AGRICULTURELAND MAPPING INTRODUCTION Ndola District is predominantly Urban/Peri urban. Currently, crop, citrus and live stock Agriculture is widely practiced. Floriculture is also practiced though at a very small scale. Ndola covers an area of 110,300 hectares. 41,418 hectares is used for agriculture. We captured the available land in Ndola, in urban and peri urban as indicated below: • Land being used for Urban Agriculture. • Land under construction. • Potential Land. • Land under electricity power pylons. • Land along the streams • Land along the rail lines • Back yards • Forestry reserves • Cemeteries • Water bodies (Dambos) • Individual farms ISSUES ON LAND MAPPING {AVAILABLE LAND FOR URBAN AGRICULTURE).Urban agriculture is being practiced through out the city. That is in the back yards of houses, along the streams, along the line of rail and also along the roads. 1 Most of the land within the city is built up, approximately 6,172 hectors is the total built up area. Almost all the openings are being filled up. E.g. Between Nkwazi and Kawama, Between Nkwazi and Pamodzi, between kansenshi and Pamodzi, Mitengo area has been opened up and there are quite a good number of good buildings. Just to mention a few. Ndola has about 17,267 hectors of land for other uses, potential land included. These are indicated below: Forestry reserves along the streams and railway lines. Due to the vastness of potential land in Ndola, land under the pylons was not considered as potential areas for agriculture. There is vast Land under electricity power lines which can be used for agricultural purposes especially those which pass through residential areas (Twapia, Nkwazi, Pamodzi, Lubuto, and Mushili to mention but a few). Despite the risks involved in growing crops under the power pylons, people have continued to practice agriculture under the electricity cables although at a very small scale and these are usually seasonal crops. This land can be used for floriculture to beautify the City and other short crops that may not disturb the activities of the electricity company.We also have land along the streams such as Kansenshi, Kafubu, Twapia and most of it is very fertile. The council considers this land as buffer zone and nothing must be grown within fifty meters from the stream to preserve the life span of the stream. But floriculture can be practiced to beautify the city. The area along the railway line is also available. The area is a buffer zone which should be used for growing short rain season crops. Floriculture (short and beautiful flowers) should be practiced to beautify the City.In high cost areas like Kansenshi, Northrise and Kanini almost every house has got a portion where urban Agriculture is or can be Practiced. Other areas that may not classified as high cost residential areas such as Messenger compound in Masala, Kansenshi Prison Camp Peter Singogo Police Camp also has adequate spaces for agricultural activities. Crops grown include groundnuts, beans pumpkins, citrus fruits can be grown in these areas. Small live stock is also being kept in some areas.About 43,387 hectares is under forestry reserve. These areas are grown by pines although part in some parts the land is bare and has been squatted upon. There are potential areas for urban agriculture in these forests. Some of the forests are: Chichele, Misaka and Ndola forest.Cemeteries can also be maintained by way of growing flowers in order to keep them clean and beautiful. These areas include : Kawama , Kantolomba, Mitengo, Kansenshi.2 Ndola also has water bodies like dambos and dams that are vital for growing crops like bananas, sugar cans and other crops that require a lot of water. These areas can also be used as grazing points for small animals like goats and sheep. These areas should be preserved. However we should be quick to mention that these areas especially around should be guarded against pollution. These are kafubu and itawa dams.As mentioned earlier that Ndola is both urban and peri urban we also have individual farms situated in peri urban areas. These areas are owned by individuals and most of them are on title deeds. The period of ownership ranges between 14 to 99 years. Activities include: rearing live stock, such as poultry, dairy cattle, piggery and rabbits. Apart from live stock , crops and fruits are also grown. The farming blocks are: Kafubu, Munkulungwe, Kaloko and Minsundu. CHALLENGES Unplanned land use within the city which causes conflicts with the local authority. Ownership of land is not easy in Ndola. Contradicting or noon existence of policies to the use of land for Urban Agriculture. Acquiring land is not as affordable as it use to be in the past. Costs have increased such that it is very difficult for an average Zambian to meet these costs e.g. non refundable application fees, Service charges, survey fees etc. RECOMMENDATIONS Urban Agriculture is practiced through out the city of Ndola although under un documented circumstances. In view of this more land should be made available to residents of the city and procedures for obtaining land and title should be revised to make it easy for the would be farmers. Open spaces like forest reserves and areas along the streams must be made available although with conditions which would help protect these areas. CONCLUSION In conclusion we would say that Ndola has vast land for urban Agriculture and all that is needed is proper planning and demarcations to allow for proper agricultural activities. Deliberate policies should be put in place to encourage people to participate in Urban Agriculture as a way of alleviating poverty and beautifying our city.
