<p> East Texas Baptist University Department of Kinesiology KINE 1120- Racquetball Fall 2016</p><p>INSTRUCTOR: Janae’ Shirley, M.Ed., CPT OFFICE: Dean Health Plex, 102 OFFICE HOURS: M- 12:00-2:00</p><p>PHONE: 903-407-0492 (cell) E-MAIL: [email protected] TEXTBOOK: No textbook is required for this course</p><p>COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will receive basic cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skill instruction related to the sport of racquetball. If this course is repeated it will count for elective credit only.</p><p>COURSE COMPETENCIES: Upon completion of the course students will:  The students will demonstrate knowledge of the rules, strategies, and fundamental skills of racquetball.  Through participation, the students will demonstrate racquetball skills.  The students will pursue cardiovascular efficiency through intense aerobic activity.  The student will demonstrate both forehand and backhand front wall shots.  The student will be able to show that they can engage in volleys. </p><p>GRADING SYSTEM: Participation 200pts (20 pts per class) Written Exam 100 pts. Health/Fitness Assessments (2) 50 pts (25 pts each) Skills Test (2) 50 pts (25 pts each) Participation Form 10 points TOTAL 435 PTS</p><p>Grading Scale: A=89.5 - 100% B=79.5 – 89.4% C=69.5 – 79.4% D=59.5 – 69.4% F=59.4% and Below </p><p>Course Requirements:</p><p> Exams- There will be one written exam given.  Skills Test- There will be two skills test given throughout the semester to measure student progress related to racquetball. </p><p> Health/Fitness Assessment Lab- Students will be tested on their general health including, weight, body composition, flexibility, blood pressure, resting heart rate, cardiovascular endurance, and grip strength. </p><p> Participation- Each student will begin the course with 200 participation points. However deductions will be made for the following: </p><p> o Missed class: 10 points will be deducted o Present but do not participate: 5 points will be deducted o Tardy (Late-after 5 minutes) to class: 3 points will be deducted </p><p>Appropriate Attire: Appropriate attire must be worn to every class. This includes warm-ups, shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. Any student not properly dressed will not be allowed to participate and 5 points will be deducted from their participation total. EYEWEAR WILL BE REQUIRED IN RACQUETBALL CLASSES. </p><p>Equipment Required: Racquets, Racquetballs, and Eyewear Goggles will not be provided for this class. It is the responsibility of each student to have their own racquet and eyewear. You will also need to bring 1 container of racquetballs. Note: The circulation desk will not check out equipment for racquetball classes. </p><p>Drop/Add/Withdraw: It is your responsibility to make sure that you are officially enrolled in this course. If, at any point, you decide to no longer attend this course, it is your responsibility to officially drop or withdraw from the course. Failure to do so will result in a failing grade. </p><p>Assumption of Risk: There are many special benefits from activities that are afforded to students by the Kinesiology and Exercise Science Department. Within the activities, it must be understood that there are dangers that may lead to injury of students. Therefore, the purpose of this section is to make all students aware that dangers do exist and that participation is done with the understanding that risk are involved. </p><p>It is to be further understood that students must share in the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. Students participating in the Kinesiology and Exercise Science program could mildly, moderately, or severely injure their anatomy in one or several of the following areas: muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, skin, teeth, and any vital organs. Catastrophic injuries, death, or permanent paralysis may occur during participation. There is not an absolute preventive against any of the above mentioned possibilities of injury. Enjoy the benefits afforded by your participation in this class, but also be aware of the potential for personal injury while you participate in classroom activities. </p><p>Method of student appraisal of faculty: Students will be given an opportunity to appraise the professor by completing the ETBU Faculty Evaluation Questionnaire at the end of the semester. The instructor, the department chairman and dean will review the responses of the students after the completion of the course.</p><p>CLASS POLICIES Absence and Tardy Policies East Texas Baptist University is committed to the policy that regular and punctual attendance is essential to successful scholastic achievement. Attendance at all meetings of the course for which a student is registered is expected. To be eligible to earn credit in a course, the student must attend at least 75 percent of all class meetings. For additional information, please refer to page 30 of the 2016-2017 Undergraduate Catalog.</p><p>Students who exceed the absence limit in a course before the official withdrawal date will have the opportunity to withdraw from the class. Students in this situation who do not choose to withdraw on or before the official withdrawal date or who exceed the absence limit in a course after the official withdrawal date will receive a grade of XF.</p><p>COURSE WITHDRAWAL A student may withdraw from a course or courses or from the University beginning with the first day through 75 percent of the semester without academic penalty. The final day to withdraw from this course is Friday, November 11. To withdraw from a course or courses or from the University the student must secure a withdrawal form from the Registrar’s Office, his/her advisor, or from the ETBU website, and follow the directions on the form, securing all required signatures. Students must process their own withdrawals. For additional information, please refer to page 29 of the 2016-2017 Undergraduate Catalog.</p><p>Academic Integrity Students enrolled at East Texas Baptist University are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity avoiding all forms of cheating, illicit possession of examinations or examination materials, unwarranted access to instructor’s solutions’ manuals, plagiarism, forgery, collusion and submissions of the same assignment to multiple courses. Students are not allowed to recycle student work without permission of the faculty member teaching the course. Students must ask permission before submitting the work since it will likely be detected by plagiarism detection programs. If the student does not inform the instructor or ask permission before the assignment is due and submitted, the instructor may treat this as an academic integrity offense. Penalties that may be applied by the faculty member to individual cases of academic dishonesty by a student include one or more of the following: • Failure of the class in question • Failure of particular assignments • Requirement to redo the work in question • Requirement to submit additional work All incidents related to violations of academic integrity are required to be reported to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and multiple violations of academic integrity will result in further disciplinary measures which could lead to dismissal from the University.</p><p>Children in Classroom In almost all instances, children are not allowed in the classroom nor are they allowed to be on campus unattended. Class sessions are for enrolled students only unless other arrangements are approved by the instructor in advance.</p><p>Classroom Behavior Expectations The classroom environment is to be conducive to learning and is under the authority of the instructor. In order to assure that all students have the opportunity to gain from the time spent in class, students are expected to demonstrate civil behavior in the classroom and show appropriate respect for the instructor and other students. Inappropriate behavior toward the instructor, in or out of the classroom, may result in a directive to the offending student to leave the classroom or the course entirely.</p><p>Classroom behaviors that disturb the teaching-learning experiences include the following behaviors: activated cellular phone or other device, demands for special treatment, frequent episodes of leaving and then returning to the class, excessive tardiness, leaving class early, making offensive remarks or disrespectful comments or gestures to the instructor or other students, missing deadlines, prolonged chattering, sleeping, arriving late to class, dominating discussions, shuffling backpacks or notebooks, disruption of group work, and overt inattentiveness. It is at the discretion of the instructor as to whether laptops will be allowed for use in the classroom.</p><p>Cell phones are to be turned off and put away. Do not have them out during class.</p><p>Early Alert As an instructor, I am committed to your success, not only in this class, but in all aspects of ETBU life. To ensure that every student takes full advantage of the educational and learning opportunities. ETBU provides tutoring services through the Success Center. If I think you would benefit from some of these special programs or services available to you, I will make the appropriate referral. You, in turn, will be expected to take advantage of the help offered to you. </p><p>Email Policy All university and class email communication will be sent to your ETBU email account. You are responsible for checking this frequently. If you choose, you may reroute your ETBU email to another email address. Your emails should be in a professional format with correct spelling, capitalization, and grammar.</p><p>Grade Appeal The Grade Appeals Process may be found in the catalog currently in use, in the Academic Policies section (pg. 26).</p><p>Incomplete Grades/Work An instructor may grant incompletes and only to students who have a major documented emergency in the last few days of a semester. More information may be found on page 27 of the current ETBU catalog.</p><p>Late Work Late work will not be accepted. </p><p>Students with disabilities A student with a disability may request appropriate accommodations for this course by contacting the Office of Academic Success, Marshall Hall, Room 301, and providing the required documentation. If accommodations are approved by the Disability Accommodations Committee, the Office of Academic Success will notify the student and the student’s professor of the approved accommodations. The student must then discuss these accommodations with his or her professor. Students may not ask for accommodations the day of an exam or due date. Arrangements must be made prior to these important dates. For additional information, please refer to page 15-16 of the 2016- 2017 Undergraduate Catalog.</p><p>Missed Tests Missed tests will not be made up unless you have an excused absence. Students who are missing a test due to a university function should make arrangements with the instructor to take the test before they leave. </p><p>Oral and Written Communication All oral and written communication will be done in formal Standard English. In written work, penalties will be assessed for difficulties with organization, clarity, punctuation, capitalization, and usage as well as the use of informal language/slang – even if the content is appropriate.</p><p>WEAPONS IN CLASS The on-campus possession of firearms, explosives, or fireworks is prohibited with the exception of the transportation and storage of firearms and ammunition by concealed handgun license holders in private vehicles (as described in SB1907) Pursuant to Section 30.06, Penal Code (trespass by license holder with a concealed handgun), a person licensed under Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code (handgun licensing law, may not enter this property (ETBU) with a concealed handgun. The ETBU President may grant authorization to a qualified and certified full-time faculty or staff member, who is a license holder with a concealed handgun to conceal carry on the University campus, at a University-sponsored event or within or on a University vehicle.
