Report of the Chair, Gwen Chavez Talked to TUPD. Construction workers are allowed 2 vendor passes. This does not stop the workers from purchasing day passes. More passes may be given but it is at the discretion of Deputy Chief Jack LeBlanc. Will talk to Tony Lorino to see if he will come to the meeting to discuss parking on campus.</p><p>II. WFMO Liaison Kathy Tsagournos, Director of Strategy, Planning and Implementation, addressed the pilot program concerning absences. It is being used as a PILOT PROGRAM by Facilities Downtown, TUPD Downtown and the Primate Center to address attendance. It is her understanding that X number of absences equals a verbal warning, X number more equals written warning and X number more equals Progressive Discipline. Since it is still in the pilot stage, it is not included in the Staff handbook. There was also confusion concerning accrued sick time and not being able to use it, and confusion about “what is policy”. She will be addressing these questions as well as is it by day or occurrence. We will need to see the Pilot. Pilot program developed as a tool for a few that are abusing sick time. Follow up next meeting to clarify. Domestic partnership affidavit – clarifying language and form has been updated in the handbook. Ruth Wilson has done extensive research on FMLA and it can be seen in the handbook. A call can be placed to Ruth to “walk you through it.” Multiple tuition waiver forms versus one depository – the systems do not talk to each other. Can we use the ID number on the Splash Cards instead of using our entire social security numbers? This is driven by Technology Services as far as using Banner ID instead of social security. Representative suggested that they use last 4 digits in the meantime. She will take that question back with her to WFMO. Wellness pay = The university is not moving in that direction at the moment.</p><p>Guest Speaker: Vincent Ilustre of the Center for Public Service.</p><p>Academic service learning is an education experience based upon a collaborative partnership between the university and the community, housed at Alcee Fortier Hall. “Learning by doing” enables students to apply academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to meet genuine community needs. Through reflection and assessment, students gain deeper understanding of course content and the importance of civil engagement. CPS Internship Program build on students’ public service experience by providing an opportunity to participate in an intensive service project with a community-focused agency. Approved CPS partnerships promote practical knowledge within a student’s major, foster professional development, and encourage civic engagement. CPS is committed to engaging in collaborative change-oriented research that engages faculty members, students and community members in projects that address community-identified needs. Each year CPS supports a select number of faculty by providing grants in community based research. Impact New Orleans is a 6-credit academic internship experience for students from both Tulane and other colleges. This program allows students the opportunity to participate in a five-week internship with local organizations focused on assisting with New Orleans rebuilding and renewal. Students also participate in an interdisciplinary course which surveys the rich cultural legacy of the legendary city through readings and discussions of literature, history, and music. The readings are closely tied to the internships students undertake at various agencies around the city, as well as tours, performances, and lectures by guests. CPS promotes international service projects for Tulane students and faculty. Public service programs located outside of the United States provide a unique opportunity for students to explore different cultures, communities and social norms. The incorporation of public service into study abroad programs creates a bridge to different cultures. This bridge facilities the development of meaningful relationships and allows students to expand their skill sets while contributing to the communities that have welcomed them to their country. Currently, CPS three study abroad programs. The CPS Service Learning Fellows program provides students with previous experience in service learning the opportunity to apply their knowledge through a credit-bearing experience. Students work with faculty members to assist with the coordination of service learning projects, promoting active learning while modeling engaged citizenship. The Fellows program provides students with an opportunity to develop leadership, managerial, and organizational skills while working closely with faculty members and community partners.
