Youth Involvement

YOUTH INVOLVEMENT

SERVICE LEARNING - Identify the youth who will be involved in the Service Learning

- Create a list of service learning projects early in the process (reference the KaBOOM! Service Learning Activity Guide as a guide)

- Think about themes to build the Service Learning around o It is often more effective to do related activities within a theme rather than numerous disconnected lessons

- Be detailed and realistic in your planning: How many activities/lessons can you complete during the planning process? Three? Five? Ten? (This will depend on the depth and complexity of the activities/lessons)

- Work with the youth to come up with a creative idea for the ribbon that will be cut at the closing ceremony. The theme of the ribbon can be related to the partners, playground, or the local community!

A FEW ACTIVITY/LESSON IDEAS We want you to be creative and think about ideas that would be great for the youth of your community. The ideas listed below are suggestions – use them as inspiration for your own activities! And again, don’t forget about the full KaBOOM! Service Learning Activity Guide, which has great detailed lessons in it.

- Recycling o Have the youth research the importance of recycling, as well as the recycling process; they can also start a simple recycling plan at their location, and help oversee and run recycling on Build Day - Landscaping o Youths research local plants that would be good to plant in the area, what these plants will need to live and grow, and finally, how to care for them. Then, they can create a watering/upkeep schedule and help with the planting and landscaping on Build Day. - Service to Others o Youths examine the importance of helping others; ways someone can help another; why this is important; make thank you cards for volunteers on Build Day

BUILD DAY - Identify ages and number of youth that will be present on Build Day

- Determine youth activities that will be taking place on Build Day; get necessary materials for these activities o Work with the KaBOOM! Project Manager for Build Day activity ideas in addition to your own ideas o Check with the KaBOOM! Project Manager as s/he can help with getting certain specific items such as paint

- Designate place for youth activities away from general construction areas; if youth activities involve working with adult volunteers such as painting or landscaping projects, be sure that there is adequate supervision for the youth.

- Work with the KaBOOM! Project Manager to come up with creative ways to get the youth involved with the closing ceremony. If the youth will not be present on Build Day, work with them beforehand to ensure their essence is felt during the day!

Visit the KaBOOM! online toolkit for more info: www.kaboom.org/toolkit
