This book offers exercises and games that teach the value of cooperation and interdependence. Good resource for teachers and parents wanting to create a safe environment for their children. (Multicultural / gay / lesbian)</p><p>Fiction Books</p><p>Many of the books in this section are picture books for ages 8 and under. Included are books that challenge stereotypical gender roles.</p><p>Blackwood, Mary. Derek the Knitting Dinosaur. Minneapolis: Carolrhoda Books, Inc., 1990. A little dinosaur loves to knit and unlike his relatives he has no interest in acting fierce. When the Ice Age arrives he clothes his grateful relatives in a variety of creations.</p><p>Cole, Babette. Princess Smarty Pants. NY. G.P. Putnam's Sons. 1986. A humorous tale of a princess who is urged by her parents to marry but she chooses a different path.</p><p>Elwin, R. and Michele Paulse. Asha's Mums. Toronto: Women's Press, 1990. A delightful book about a young African American girl with 2 lesbian moms. How Would You Feel if Your Dad Was Gay? Boston: Alyson Pub., 1991. A story of young people with gay parents and how they each deal with the challenges school presents. (3rd and 4th grade, includes ethnic and racial diversity)</p><p>Jenness, Aylette. Families: A Celebration of Diversity Commitment, and Love. Boston: Houghton, 1990. This book profiles individual young people and their families. Each young person shares a story about their family. (3rd grade to adult, includes ethnic and racial diversity)</p><p>Munsch, Robert. The Paper Bag Princess. Toronto: Annick Press Ltd. 1995. A smart princess encounters a dragon who wrecks her castle and takes her fiancé prince. She outsmarts the dragon, saves the prince, and drops him when he insults her.</p><p>Newman, Leslie. Saturday is Patty Day. VT: New Victoria Pub., 1993. This book deals with a "gay divorce." Two moms split up and the child begins visitations between the two moms.</p><p>Ryan, 100 is a Family. NY: Hyperion, 1994. A colorful counting book with people from diverse backgrounds, including gays and lesbians.</p><p>Skutch, Robert. Who's in a Family. CA: Tricycle Press, 1995. This picture book depicts families of all sorts and effectively deals with race, sexual orientation, single parent families, etc. Compares human families to different fan- dlies in the animal kingdom.</p><p>Stewart, Sarah. The Library. NY. Farrar, 1995. This is the story of a young girl who loves to read and who eventually collects a house full of books. Her home becomes a public library and she moves in with a friend of the same sex and they read and walk to the library together. (gender roles)</p><p>Valentine, Johnny. One Dad, Two Dad, Green Dad, Blue Dad. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1994. A fun and engaging book about a boy with two blue dads. It addresses the issue of gay parents in a light and playful manner. A good book for teachers addressing family structures with their students.</p><p>Valentine, Johnny. The Duke Who Outlawed Jelly Beans. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1993. There are five fairy tales with colorful illustrations in this book. The children in the stories try to make the world a better place. Families are presented in varied and nontraditional roles.</p><p>GLSEN/Boston 1999 2 K-8 Edition Valentine, Johnny. Two Moms the Zark and Me. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1993. A young boy goes to the zoo and inadvertently gets separated from his two moms. While trying to find them he meets folks who dislike his family structure and want to save him from his moms.</p><p>Willhoite, Michael. Daddy's Roommate. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1990. A colorful picture book about a young boy, his mom, and his two dads. Straight Parents, Gay Children. New York: Thunder's Mouth Press, 1995. A father's personal account of coming to terms with his daughter's lesbianism and discovering his life was enriched. Recommended for parents.</p><p>Blumenfeld, Warren. Homophobia: How We All Pay the Price. Boston: Beacon Press, 1992. An anthology highlighting the theory that homophobia not only oppresses lesbians, gay males, and bisexuals but also hurts heterosexuals in some very important ways.</p><p>Blumenfeld, Warren J., and Diane Raymond. Looking at Gay and Lesbian Life. Boston: Beacon Press, 1989. A book that brings together in one volume an encyclopedic wealth of well-researched, up-to-date information about every major aspect of gay, lesbian, and bisexual life.</p><p>Cohen, Susan, and Daniel Cohen. When Someone You Know is Gay. New York: Dell Pub., 1989. This book answers some basic questions for people with gay and lesbian friends and family members.</p><p>Clausen, Jan and Dubermann, Martin. Beyond Gay or Straight: Understanding Sexual Orientation. Chelsea House Pub., 1996 Examining the various theories that have been proposed throughout history and present day, this book explains the riddle of sexual orientation, assessing their validity, placing them in a cultural context, and explaining the practical ramifications of each. Includes 40 photos.</p><p>Dew, Robb Forman. The Family Heart: A Memoir of When Our Son Came Out. New York: Ballantine Books, 1994. Ms. Dew shares the story of the changes her family go through when they learn their son is gay. She and her husband eventually come out to their community as the parents of a gay son.</p><p>GLSEN/Boston 1999 4 K-8 Edition Faderman, Lillian. Surpassing the Love of Men: Romantic Friendship and Love Between Women from the Renaissance to the Present. New York: Morrow, 1981. A well researched history text about the social and cultural history of love between women. The history of "romantic friendships" (the term used before the term lesbian) is traced from the 16th century to the present.</p><p>Feinberg, Leslie. Transgender Warriors: Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman. Beacon Press, 1997. A unique, thoroughly researched, illustrated history of transexuals and transvestites documents the history of their lives and explores the meaning of their experience.</p><p>Frank, Barney and the History Project. Improper Bostonians: Lesbian and Gay History from the Puritans to Playland. Boston: Beacon Press, 1998. Three hundred years of Boston’s Gay and Lesbian history is covered in this comprehensive book which includes photographs, news clippings and original documents.</p><p>Governor 's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, Making Schools Safe for Gay and Lesbian Youth: Breaking the Silence in Schools and in Families. State House, Room 111, Boston, MA 02133. Two reports and recommendations for change from the Massachusetts Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth.</p><p>Griffin, Pat. Strong Women, Deep Closets: Lesbians and Homophobia in Sport. Human Kinetics Pub, 1998. Griffin, as a former athlete and coach, examines the homophobia and heterosexism rampant in women’s sports. Chapters include issues such as; stereotypes, discrimination and the Christian right’s role in sports. Interviews with lesbian athletes and coaches bring a personal perspective to the discussion.</p><p>Harbeck, Karen, ed. Coming Out of the Classroom Closet: Gay and Lesbian Students, Teachers, and Curricula. Binghamton, New York: Harrington Park Press, 1992. A collection of essays for individuals concerned with improving the climate for lesbians and gay males in the schools.</p><p>Harris, Mary, ed. School Experiences of Gay and Lesbian Youth: the Invisible Minority. Haworth Press, 1998</p><p>Herdt, Gilbert, and Andrew Boxer. Children of Horizons: How Gay and Lesbian Teens are Leading a New Way Out of the Closet. Boston: Beacon Press, 1993. A comprehensive research text on gay/lesbian youth in Chicago. It details the coming out process and the developmental, psychological, and social challenges these youth face.</p><p>GLSEN/Boston 1999 5 K-8 Edition Hutchins, Loraine and L. Kaahumanu. Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1991. A comprehensive anthology that addresses the depth of experiences for bisexuals. The psychology, spirituality, community, and politics of being bisexual are explored. (describes sexual activity)</p><p>Jennings, Kevin, ed. Becoming Visible. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1994. Teachers of history will find this reader for high school and college students invaluable. It shows that gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender individuals have existed and prospered over the last 2000 years and from many different cultures in our world.</p><p>Jennings, Kevin, ed. One Teacher in Ten: Gay & Lesbian Educators Tell Their Stories. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1994. A collection of personal essays by teachers about how being gay/lesbian has influenced their professional lives.</p><p>Jennings, Kevin, ed. Telling Tales Out of School. Boston: Alyson Pub., 1998. In more than 30 essays, gays, lesbians, and bisexuals look back at their school days to find that they are still trying to unlearn a basic lesson imparted by the educational system to homosexuals: "Hate yourself".</p><p>Kissen, Rita M. The Last Closet: The Real lives of Gay Teachers. Heinemann, 1996 Lesbian and gay teachers, counselors, librarians, and administrators tell their stories of struggle in the face of homophobia. Offers descriptions of daily life in the classroom and common problems and issues, and suggests survival strategies for lesbian and gay educators and advice for heterosexual parents, teachers, and administrators.</p><p>Lipkin, Arthur. A Staff Development Manual for Anti-Homophobia Education in the Secondary Schools, Gay and Lesbian High School Curriculum Project, Harvard Graduate School of Education, 1992. A manual for conducting staff-development workshops around issues of homophobia and gay and lesbian adolescent development.</p><p>Lorde, Audré. Our Dead Behind Us. New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 1986. This collection of poems explores the poet's feelings of the past with her hope for the future. Ms. Lorde considers the importance of activism in life.</p><p>McAllister, Wirth, and Wirth. Beyond Acceptance: Parents of Lesbian and Gay Children Talk of Their Experiences. New York: Prentice-Hall, 1986. Parents of lesbians and gays talk about their experiences. They take the reader through all the stages of pain and grief, to increased closeness.</p><p>GLSEN/Boston 1999 6 K-8 Edition Miller, Neil. Out of the Past. New York: Random House, 1992. A history text of more than one hundred years of the gay rights movement. Good research tool includes: cowboys, Native Americans, "Boston Marriages," to modern gay/lesbian movement.</p><p>Ratti, Rakesh. A Lotus of Another Color. Alyson Publishers, 1993 This is an extremely important collection of works on gay and lesbian themes from South Asia for two reasons. Firstly, the genres are authentic, and not filtered through the lenses of Western scholars. Secondly, it successfully relates the context in which homosexual identity is constructed in South Asia. It also has some useful historical essays, and great poetry. A must read for ANY student interested in South Asian gay and lesbian culture. </p><p>Roscoe, Will, ed. Living the Spirit: A Gay American Indian Anthology. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1989. Useful information about the roles of men and women and the contributions of lesbian/gays to traditional life among Native American cultures of North America.</p><p>Ryan, C., MSW, Futterman, D., MD, Lesbian and Gay Youth: Care and Counseling. Columbia University Press, 1998 The first book on the care, counseling and support needs of lesbian and gay youth for providers, parents, advocates and interested readers. It takes the mystique out of sexual orientation issues and provides a comprehensive reference guide for caring for all adolescents, particularly those who are lesbian, gay or bisexual or who may be questioning their sexual identity. Included in an easy-to-read format are guidelines for assessment, treatment, prevention and referral along with the latest research, practice wisdom and state-of-the-art knowledge on lesbian and gay youth by leading experts in lesbian and gay health, mental health, HIV/AIDS and adolescents.</p><p>Saffron, Lisa. What About the Children? Casell Academic, 1997. Stories supported by an analysis of recent research on the children of gays and lesbians, as well as consideration of the issues raised by the interviewee: living with prejudice, what children need from parents, influences on sexuality, and who counts as family.</p><p>Shyer and Fanta. Not Like Other Boys. Boston: Houghton, 1996. A mother and son collaborate on this work. Each tells the story of Chris's homosexuality and their change from shame to acceptance to love.</p><p>Sutton, Roger. Hearing Us Out: Voices from the Gay and Lesbian Community. Boston: Little Brown & Co., 1997. Fifteen teenagers and adults tell their stories of growing up gay and lesbian. The individuals come from a variety of backgrounds and photographs are included.</p><p>Unks, Gerald, ed. The Gay Teen. New York: Routledge, 1995. This book was written for gay and lesbian educators. It explores gay/lesbian adolescence from theoretical and practical perspectives.</p><p>GLSEN/Boston 1999 7 K-8 Edition Woog, Dan. Jocks: True Stories of America’s Gay Male Athletes. Los Angeles: Alyson Pub., 1998. Woog profiles more than twenty-five high school and college athletes and coaches, all but one of whom are out to their teammates and coaches. He reveals both the complexity and the normalcy of their lives from an insider’s perspective.</p><p>Woog, Dan. School's Out. Los Angeles: Alyson Pub., 1995.
