
<p> “Agua Vida” An Eye-Opening Tour “Water the Gift of Life” sponsored by Behrhorst Partners for Development Led by Zoe Kopp and Susan Slater You are warmly invited to join this, our 36th tour since 1986 Group size limited to 12 participants </p><p>Itinerary Highlights</p><p>Saturday, January 8: Arrive in Guatemala City where you will be met at the airport and driven to Antigua, an hour away. Walking tour of the colonial capital of Central America. Group discussion about Guatemala's history and current challenges focusing on water issues will set the stage for our upcoming experiences, observations and reflections. Overnight in Antigua.</p><p>Sunday, January 9: Attend church services in one of the colonial churches in Antigua or enjoy a historical guided walk and then visit San Antonio Aguas Calientes, a community famous for its exquisite and distinctive back-strap weavings. Overnight in Antigua.</p><p>Monday, January 10: Visit the BPD office in Chimaltenango, the community (and now bustling urban center) where Dr. Carroll Behrhorst established a modest clinic nearly 50 years ago. From Chimaltenango we'll visit a rural village to see examples of BPD's work--and maybe be put to work! We will learn about the different type of water systems, how they work and maintenance challenges. Overnight in Antigua.</p><p>Tuesday, January 11: We'll travel to Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlan. After visiting the Galleria Nan Cruz and the Museo Lacustre Atitlan, we'll have plenty of time for shopping or "just looking." We'll learn about the concerns and rapid changes in the water quality of Lake Atitlan. Overnight in Panajachel.</p><p>Wednesday, January 12: After breakfast we'll take a boat across magnificent Lake Atitlan, the bellybutton of the earth, to the community of Santiago Atitlan. Here we'll visit a MayaWorks women's group producing beaded products. We'll take a walking tour of the community which may include a search for Maximon. Time permitting, we'll visit historic Peace Park and then Panabaj to learn about the community's recovery since it was devastated by Hurricane Stan. Overnight in Santiago Atitlan. </p><p>Thursday, January 13: After breakfast we'll take a boat back across the lake, and then drive back to Antigua. The afternoon is free for you to further explore Antigua on your own. Overnight in Antigua.</p><p>Friday, January 14: A second visit to a community in which BPD is working to learn more about water its use and the other components of a healthy village. . We'll join other BPD board members and staff for this outing. We'll conclude the tour with a special wrap-up dinner in Antigua. Overnight in Antigua.</p><p>Saturday, Janury 15: Shuttles to Guatemala City airport for departures to the U.S. Or optional additional travel on your own in Guatemala to historical Tikal, the lovely Rio Dulce or language lessons in Antigua.</p><p>Climate/Clothing: The weather in the Guatemalan Highlands is normally has very pleasant year-round with daytime temperatures reaching into the 80's and evening temperatures down into the 50's. We advise using sunscreen in the Highlands because of the altitude. Dress is informal throughout the trip, but women are advised to wear long pants or skirts in the Highlands. </p><p>Identification/Vaccinations: A current U.S. passport is required. No vaccinations are required, but it is always advisable to have your tetanus up to date. </p><p>Flights: Participants are responsible for making their flight arrangements; most major airlines fly into Guatemala. Airfare is usually between $500-600. </p><p>Costs: $1,100 not including airfare. Included in this affordable-as-possible-price are all meals, double occupancy rooms, in-country transportation, and an unforgettable experience renewing friendships, developing new cross-cultural connections, and seeing first-hand the work of BPD in the highlands of Guatemala. </p><p>Payments: A non-refundable $150 deposit to "Behrhorst Partners for Development" secures your place on the tour.
