<p> Murray State University COMMON SYLLABUS Revised August 2006</p><p>DEPARTMENT: ACS COURSE NUMBER: SED 613 CREDIT HOURS: 3</p><p>I. TITLE: Advanced Behavior Support</p><p>II. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Historical and current approaches for children with learning and emotional-behavior disorders will be discussed. An emphasis will be placed on advanced instruction, therapeutic techniques, and research related to best practices.</p><p>III. PURPOSE: This course is designed to inform teachers of strategies and techniques that can be used to deal with students with challenging behaviors. </p><p>IV. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Following each objective, and enclosed in parentheses, are the number of the Experienced Teacher Standard for Preparation and Certification. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate: A. the needs of children with challenging behaviors. (4, 5, 6, 7) B. different strategies to use with children with challenging behaviors.(2, 3, 4) C. therapeutic techniques and identify the children they can be used with. (1, 2, 10) D. the historical perspectives of behavior management. (2, 6)</p><p>The EPSB Themes of diversity, closing the achievement gap, and literacy/reading will be explored in this class. Students will look at issues dealing with the aberrant behavior of students and ways to effectively overcome those problems to teach students.</p><p>V. CONTENT OUTLINE: A. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES: The class format will be lecture/discussion, hands-on activities, demonstration, and application projects.</p><p>VII. FIELD, CLINICAL, AND/OR LABORATORY EXPERIENCES: None </p><p>VIII. RESOURCES: Computer Labs, Resource Library</p><p>IX. GRADING PROCEDURES: A. Course requirements Paper 150 Participation 150 Presentation 200 Research Report 50 Final 100</p><p>Paper – Students will write an 8-10-page paper over a topic of choice from the course content list.</p><p>Presentation – Students will give a 75 to 90 minute presentation covering their above topic of choice. Presentations will include a review of the current literature on the topic, explanation, and active demonstration.</p><p>Research Report - Students will present two research studies to the class. One will be during their presentation and the other will be assigned.</p><p>Final – Students will complete an application based final exam</p><p>B. Grading Scale A = 90 - 100% B = 80 - 89% C = 70 - 79% D = 60 - 69% E = below 59%</p><p>X.
