Sound and Sense Gallery Walk

Sound and Sense Gallery Walk

Sound and Sense Gallery Walk

Purpose: To begin our study of poetry with an overview of your chapter from Perrine’s Sound and Sense: An Introduction to Poetry

1. Check out a book and EVERY ONE is required to read chapter 1 and take notes on key ideas that you want to share with the class. 2. Choose a partner 3. You will be assigned a chapter from the book 4. Read the chapter and record key points you will share with the class. Pay special attention to the boldfaced vocabulary in your chapter. You will need to include this on your visual and handouts. 5. Choose 2-3 poems from your chapter that best highlight the concept you are going to “teach” the class. Annotate ONE using the same method you used for your favorite poem you shared with a small group. (Ben, wasn’t sure if they should type annotation?)

6. Create a poster (don’t panic) and a ONE page handout (see below for details) 7. Share you visual with the class in a Gallery Walk (more directions to come later) 8. Take notes from the visuals displayed 9. Study these notes and glossary of literary terms for an objective poetry terms quiz

Visual Requirements: Create a poster (yes, I said it…) that contains the following:  Chapter title  Summary of key ideas from chapter (bullet points that get to the heart of the chapter)  Examples poems from your chapter (include title and author) that are a good example of your chapter’s concept. One should be annotated for the concept and the other two are simply there for display (should all be annotated for chapter concept?)  Poster should be easy to read (type things up in large enough font for people to read from a distance) and easy to follow. Don’t worry about how pretty it looks. You just want to get out information fast!

Handout requirements: You must create a ONE PAGE handout for all your classmates to have. Mess with the margins and fonts to make this only one page. You must print and give a copy and email the file to your teacher. [email protected] or [email protected] In the subject line please put your name, chapter number and hour. This must be done by Monday, October 12 at the end of the hour! (Can we ask for this on Friday?)

Please include the following on your handout:  Chapter number and title  Key points explained a little further  ALL BOLDFACED words in your chapter with definitions

The Gallery Walk : Students will walk from poster to poster jotting downs notes about the chapters concepts and poetry annotations. Write down poetry titles and authors and cool things you noticed about the poems. What lines do you find interesting? Why? What effect do these lines create for you?

Ben, I am lost about this assignment. Let’s meet so we can chat about it! I need to get this for copies! I will create a guided notetaking for the Gallery Walk.
