Relay for Life Is the American Cancer Society's Signature Event That Brings More Than 3

Relay For Life® is the American Cancer Society's signature event that brings more than 3.5 million people from 4,900 communities across the country together each year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.

Relay For Life® is a fun-filled, overnight event that empowers everyone to help fight cancer by raising money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission. Teams of people camp out at local high schools, parks, or fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relay For Life® symbolizes the hope that people lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face the disease have support, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School has participated in the Shenandoah County Relay for Life for over the past ten years and has raised money to assist in providing patient treatment and services, as well as support cancer research efforts. This year’s total contributions from the Shenandoah County Relay for Life were $185,881.97. SHES contributed to this amount $1,314.30 through personal donations, PTO contributions and SHES’s Jeans Days. Each staff member contributes $3.00 to “Dress Down for A Cure” on our monthly “Friday Jeans Day”. If you visit Sandy Hook and notice the staff is dressed “casually” for work, we are supporting the ACS in their efforts to find a cure!

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, you are not alone! The American Cancer Society is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year to answer questions, address concerns and just listen to cancer patients, their family members and friends. For more information, call 1-800-ACS-2345 to directly speak with an ACS representative or visit www.cancer.org .
