Jelly Bean Dispenser

Your Great Grandfather Sweet Stan, the “candy connoisseur” and “part-time scientist” has innovated a new way to make jelly beans that have different flavors. For example, he has discovered a way to make jelly beans that taste like chocolate ice cream, hot dogs with ketchup, peanut butter and jelly, and even pizza. He would like to share his new type of jelly beans with the public by offering free samples in stores. He hopes that by offering free samples of 4-10 beans, people would like them so much that they will go out and buy them by the jars and make him rich and famous. However, he needs someone to “invent” a jelly bean dispenser for him.

Challenge: Your team of 2 students will design and develop a prototype of a small jelly bean dispenser to dispense 4-10 bean samples from 4 ounces of jelly beans.

Criteria and Constraints:  Your jelly bean dispenser must be made with only the items from the Inventor’s Pack / Bag.  Supplies will not be replaced if damaged or incorrectly used after initial check in.  The jelly bean dispenser must be able to hold at least four ounces of jelly beans (note: Students will be given a small amount of beans to create their dispenser (NOT four ounces). Four ounce bags will be available at the instructor’s cart).  The jelly bean dispenser must be able to dispense a small “free sample” of approximately 4-10 jelly beans from the four ounces three times (dividers of 4-10 beans may not be used).  You may not shake the entire dispenser, unless part of the design (see instructor for permission upon designing) and you may not create a simple spoon to scoop the beans out.  Beans and inventors bag may not be part of the dispenser.

Materials and Tools:  Inventor’s Pack  Glue gun (glue is to be used sparingly, not in globs and only to hold two pieces together, not to be a part of the actual device)  Masking tape (to hold two pieces together, not to be a part of the actual device)  Scissors  Wire Cutters (to cut paper clips if necessary)

Procedures: 1. Break into small groups of 2 students. 2. Each student completes their own packet. 3. Obtain and review the items in the Inventor’s Pack. 4. With you team, complete the following design process: a) Discuss the problem (record notes in packet) b) Discuss the criteria and constraints (record notes in packet) c) Discuss alternatives (ideas) for solving the problem (make sketches in packet) d) Choose the best idea (make detailed sketches in packet) e) Build a prototype (working model) f) Evaluate and test your prototype, refine as needed (record notes in packet) 5. Present the completed “Jelly Bean Dispenser” to the class.

2
