If You Only Do One Thing

If You Only Do One Thing

David Melling If you only do one thing...

CFE Levels Early and First (Ages 3-7)

Resources created by Linda Murray, classroom teacher at St. Peter’s Primary School in Galashiels

Design a hug HWB 0-30a, HWB 1-30b, EXA 0-12a

On the last few pages of Hugless Douglas there are some lovely pages showing different types of hug with a drawing to accompany each one. Many are featured on his website as well. Have your learners ‘act out’ all the hugs. Can they think of any others and draw an accompanying picture?

Alternatively, take the sandwich hug as your theme and think about all the different ‘lovely’ sandwiches you could make: the happiness sandwich; the kindness sandwich, etc. What would they look like? Make sandwiches using bear shaped cookie cutters. Take this one step further and write the instructions to make your yummy sandwiches. Use this as part of your Circle Time activities or Health and Wellbeing programme on healthy eating, food preparation, and basic hygiene.

Wake up fitness regime HWB 0-21a/1-21a, HWB 0-22a

Douglas is always yawning when he gets up in the morning: he can be very sleepy. Design a wake up fitness workout to help him become more alert. Your learners could come up with all the moves and even select some of the music. As Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes will feature in the Authors Live Event this may be a good starting point. Another option is the Weekly Rap Song, which helps teach the days of the week as well as movement, or a selection from Sticky Kids if this resource is available to you. These are just some suggestions to get you started: there are many resources in schools and online. http://www.songsforteaching.com/happalmer/weeklyrap.htm http://www.stickykids.co.uk/home/homepage.aspx

1 Alternatively, link this with your school’s charity work and try one of the many fundraising initiatives, e.g. The MacMillan Dress Up and Dance Day which has a series of short, easy to learn dance routines accessible for all ages. http://www.macmillan.org.uk/get-involved/fundraising-events/event- detail/287/dressupanddance

Hold a tea party Designing objects: Tch 0-12a/1-12a. Writing: Lit 1-28a. Food prep: HWB 1-30b. Running cafe: HWB 1-13a

This is a given really! There is so much scope here for writing invites, menus, recipes, place cards, making bunting, etc. You can make hats and face masks. Have activity stations where the children make dress up bears, and try some of the activities and resources from the website. Play games adapted to the bear theme. The children can be involved in every step including making the refreshments. Refreshments can include milk shakes, (the cows make them in the Douglas series) pop cakes decorated to look like Douglas or cakes and biscuits decorated appropriately.

Alternatively, sign up to One Planet Picnic and run a pop up café or tuck shop. Design your own recipes, test them out and decide which work best for your café or shop. Raise funds for a particular charity and make this a fundraiser – this could contribute towards your Eco Schools project.

2
