Board Attendance: Jason Ratliff, Jeff Waidner, Lance Sontag, Mark Sires, and Mary Clark Club History: Lance stated he is storing the club history in his home and would like to move it to the storage shed or have someone else store the items. The ideal solution would be to scan the pictures and newsletters and store them on a flash drive. There is concern that the climate in the storage shed may damage the pictures. Web Site: Mark updated the Board on the status of our web site location. The Board agreed to buy space on GoDaddy.com for $4 to $5 at month. New Members: So far the only new member who paid their dues and has attended two functions is Lindy Patnode. A motion was made and seconded to accept Lindy Patnode’s application to become a member of our Club. Motion carried. Show Meeting: The Show meeting is scheduled for August 5th at 2:00 p.m. at Lance’s club house. Meeting adjourned: 7:43 p.m.

1Man’s mind, stretched by a new idea, never goes back to its original dimensions

Page 2 of 6 SCMC General Meeting July 25, 20122 Submitted by Mary Clark The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by President Jason Ratliff. Treasurer’s Report: Balance – Checking $(edited) and Savings $(edited) Coffee Stop: It was reported in the June General Meeting minutes that the club made around $1,100 and the correct amount is $940.44. Club History: Lance would like to remove the club history books he is storing in his home to the storage shed. The ideal solution would be to have someone scan all the items and put them on a flash drive. There is concern that the climate in the storage shed may damage the pictures. If anyone has extra room in your home, please let Lance know. Another idea was to too see how much it would cost to have a company or club member scan our items for us. Web Site: Gail Welch gave a brief update on our web site status. Basically we were getting free space for our web site because of people knowing people. The business is changing its set up and we no longer are able to piggyback. We now have our own space on GoDaddy.com for $5.00 a month. Upper Valley Rally: Gail Welch stated the club made $400.00 on the car show. This event was a huge success and something the club can do again next year! The event was a way to raise funds for the Greenway. The Greenway is trying to connect Union Gap to Naches. A motion was made and seconded to donate $100.00 of our money to the Greenway Fund Motion carried. National Night Out: Chris Knox spoke to our club about National Night Out at Wixson Park in Selah on August 7, 2012. Our club committed 12 cars to attend the event. Pony Trails and Car Show: The route was discussed and a decision was made to let those from out of town know that there will be two tenths of a mile of unpaved road. The Club decided to have two routes. All cars drive to Camp Prime Time turnoff with the second group going on around the lake. Ray said he would drive the alternate route and get the mileage for it. Someone will need to volunteer to lead the second group. The Show meeting is August 5 at Lance’s Club House at 2:00 p.m. and Raffle items are needed! Drawings: Don Champoux won the door prize and Ray Fletcher won the 50/50 drawing. New Business: Dave Mitts has the club patches and flags in his possession to sell. Velda stated that Alan Frasier’s father passed away. A motion was made and seconded to donate $50.00 in his name to Children’s Wishes and Dreams. Motion carried. Upcoming Shows: Working Man’s Show in Tieton on July 29, 2012 is a benefit for Vickie’s Café. Vickie is 80 something and is in need of repairs to her refrigeration unit. She has supported the community for over 40 years. Naches Sportsman’s Day, is September 8. The 5th Annual Car Show and Flea Market in Bickleton takes place Saturday, September 1, 2012. Meeting Adjourned: 8:40 p.m.

The Top of the Valley Car Show in Tieton, Washington Sunday July 29, 2012. Richard Rettig and I attended. Con and Judy and Marsha were instrumental in the show organization and didn't enter their cars. Richard took 1st place in the 1970 class and I took third in the 1960 class with my 1964 Thunderbird. The show was very nice with beautiful trophies and lots of door prizes. It was also very well run and the little town square made for a really nice setting. Proceeds from the show were to benefit Vickies café run by an 85 year old lady (Vicky) who runs the café daily and who has been an active member of the community for 64 years. She recently had had some problems with her ancient refrigeration equipment and the folks in the area just wanted to show appreciation to her by helping her out. Congrats to Con, Judy, and Marsh for their efforts to make it a great event. The club met at Bi-mart at 8:30 am and followed Al Brown of the Yakima Greenway to the beginning of the west 3-mile stretch of the Greenway path that ends in Naches. The PT Cruiser Club had offered to help us with the show so we let them follow BEHIND us down the pathway. Normally cars are not allowed access to the Greenway but because we were hosting the Show & Shine we were given special privilege. We had about 20 cars participate in the cruising of the pathway. The cars then lined up in down town Naches on both sides of the creek under some big old shade trees and kicked off the beginning of the Show & Shine. We had 40 cars total, not bad for a first time event. There were food vendors and Apple Bin Races to entertain during the show. Awards were given at 2:00 pm. There were five categories, four voted by participants and one awarded by the Mayor’s appointee. The Upper Valley Rally was a first time event created by the Naches Valley Chamber of Commerce, The Yakima Greenway and the Town of Naches. The purpose was three fold; to bring awareness of the effort to complete the Greenway Path from Naches to 40th Ave., to entice spectators and participants to come see what Naches and their businesses have to offer and to have a great time doing all the above! The three entities mentioned above would like to thank the Sun Country Mustang Club for stepping up and helping make our 1st Annual Upper Valley Rally a success. I would like to especially thank Lance Sontag for running the show; we couldn’t have done it without you! Here is the list of winners: Best Paint - Mike Mastel, Best Wheels -Alex Vimont, Best Interior - Ray Fletcher (SCMC Member), Best of Show & The Mayor's Award - Ben & Dave Barrett. Submitted by Gail Welch

Moxee Hop Festival Parade:3 We did have four red cars and Pat and Don Champoux’s car is orange. One of the red was a couple going by and David Hawkins asked them to join us. It turned out that the gal was from Naches that I have always known. It sounded as thou David was asking them to join the club. One of Pats’ friends came by and she joined us. Club members were Dave Mitts and Marcie, Ray, Ken Delozier, Dave Hawkins, Virgil, Pat and Don and me. Pat Champoux was involved with the Hop Festival. It was blazing hot in that asphalt parking lot with no shade, except we could stand in the shadow of a building, we survived, maybe lost a pound or two, but WE WERE THERE! Edison The early 1900s were an exciting time in American social history. The Automobile Age was dawning. Thousands of Americans were steering their horseless carriages along country roads and down city streets. To Edison, the great value of the automobile was that it woke up Americans. “It has caused them to move, to stir themselves, to get out and away…” he said. Not all cars of the early 1900s were powered with gasoline engines. Some were steam cars. Others were electric. Electric cars get their power from storage batteries. Early in the history of automobiles, electric cars were very popular. In 1900, thirty-eight percent of all cars were battery powered. Edison believed that the future belonged to electric cars. They were quiet and easy to drive. They had none of the smelly fumes of the gasoline engine. As for steam engines, they were costly. And it took a long time to get a steam-powered car going. But electric cars had their failings, too. Storage batteries of the day wore out quickly, and had to be recharged after about fifty miles of use. There were no long trips in electric cars. The batteries also didn’t generate very much power. Few electric cars could travel faster than twenty miles an hour. Edison took up the challenge of developing a better storage battery. The work went on for years. A rugged and more reliable battery was the result. It boasted a longer life than earlier storage batteries. “At last the battery is finished,” Edison wrote in 1909. The next year, Edison’s factory began turning out the improved batteries by the hundreds of thousands. But the demand was never what Edison hoped for. By 1909, the gasoline engine had been found to be superior. Gasoline-powered cars were lower in price. They were more dependable and traveled faster. The popularity of battery-powered cars had nose-dived. Henry Ford helped to trigger the popularity of gasoline-powered cars. His Ford Motor Company produced the first cars that large numbers of people could afford. In later years, Edison and Ford became close friends. (If Edison would have succeeded earlier with his batteries, where do you think the Mustang would be in the history of this nation?) We are then planning on driving to West Virginia for October, North Carolina for November and Florida by December. We miss you guys and especially miss driving our Mustang during the club’s various activities. I want to especially thank those of you for keeping us posted on the club as well as of other things and we wish you all well.
