<p> Anim Test 3 Staging - Silhouettes STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS</p><p>GOAL:</p><p>Staging is one of the 12 Principles of Animation. </p><p>In AT2 we learned that have good or strong lines of action help define the pose, as well as adding a level of communication as the what and where or the flow of the action that is happening. </p><p>In this exercise we are going to build upon what we learned in AT2 as we explore Silhouettes. With a really good or strong pose, we don’t need to see the details, or know what is being said, the body language by itself is communicating very clearly what is going on in the action. </p><p>One way to illustrate this and the check the strength of any given pose is to consider its silhouette. </p><p>The goal of this lesson then is to be able to identify poses that have strong silhouettes.</p><p>PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this lesson, student will: 1. Have a fundamental understanding of what is meant by a creating a pose that has a good or strong silhouette 2. Be able to identify poses with strong silhouettes. 3. Understand the difference between poses that have good and bad silhouettes. 4. For this exercise we will again be using Photoshop, so the students will also have the opportunity to expand their knowledge of this powerful application. </p><p>INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Find 5 still frames from any film that shows a character in a pose with a strong silhouette. a. At least half of the character should be in frame b. The resulting silhouette should be easily readable. c. They should be of characters in action. d. No more than one standing pose and then only if you must, but then that pose must have a strong attitude that reads well</p><p>2. Now grab still frames from any animated movie, or short where the characters have strong silhouettes. The same rules apply for these shots as the ones above. 3. Open these in photoshop, and combined your images in a layered document a. One still per layer b. These can be stacked on top of each other or spread out on the page. c. Canvas size should be 8.5” x 11” portrait or landscape. 4. Your photoshop file needs to contain both the original image and the silhouette you made from it. 5. Create a new blank layer over the layer with the size and using the brush. Cover over the character in black so that when you’re done, we see a black silhouette on that character in the frame. 6. Files should be named lastname_P#_AT3 7. Each of these images should be the best examples you can find of good and interesting action. 8. No repeats of the action described.</p><p>EVALUATION: Student work will be evaluated based on the following criteria.</p><p>1. Did the student follow all of the instructions for the project. 2. 1 point per image with the line of action clearly described 3. Plus 1 point each for setting the photoshop files up correctly. </p>
