<p> The man the dolphins love</p><p>Jean-Marc Barr's father is American and his mother is French. His father was a pilot in the Air Force, so the family lived in many different countries : Germany, France and the USA. Before his father went to Vietnam, they settled in Virginia. There, Jean-Marc became a real American boy. Like all American kids, he played football and watched television a lot.</p><p>A born actor</p><p>His father wanted him to serve in the armed forces. At 17, he went to the Air Force Academy. He soon realised he was not really made for it. He studied cinema, philosophy and literature in California. But he decided to become an actor. So, he went to London to attend drama lessons with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In the meantime, he was offered minor roles in several films.</p><p>The part that changed his life</p><p>He met Jean-Luc Besson in London. The French director selected him for Le Grand Bleu. Millions of people applauded Jean-Marc and the dolphins. And he was nominated for an Oscar as best actor. He said he was afraid to be type-cast in the role, because everybody saw him as the diver Jean-Jacques Maillol. He wanted to play other characters - quickly !
