Procedure

On May 22, 2017 we tested water at Bear Lake Beach in North Muskegon MI. We used Hach test kits/procedures (with accuvacs) and DR890 colorimeters to measure nitrates, total phosphates (digested for 30 minutes at 150 oC), dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, and turbidity. We evaporated 100 milliliters of lake water to measure total solids using a Flinn Scientific balance certain to 0.001 g. Temperature was measured using digital thermometers at locations two miles from each other. E. coli bacteria was grown, with one milliliter of lake water on 3M Petrifilm at 32oC for 24 hours. pH was measured with pH paper and confirmed with a pH probe and Vernier LabQuest.
