(March 9, 2009) − The Blue Note 7, an all-star jazz septet, will celebrate 70 years of jazz from Blue Note Records with a stop in the Bluegrass at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Singletary Center for the Arts Concert Hall. The group will perform songs from the album "Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records," which was released in Jan. 2009. The Blue Note 7 concert is the last performance of the Singletary Signature Series presented by the Alltech Fortnight Festival. Alfred Lion first became enchanted by jazz music when he attended a concert by Sam Woodin's Orchestra in Berlin at the age of 16. It wasn't until he witnessed a jazz concert at Carnegie Hall that Lion would become inspired to found his own record label in partnership with communist writer Max Margulis in 1938, which he called Blue Note Records. Seventy years later, it's celebrating its anniversary with the release of "Mosaic" and a national tour of A-list artists steeped in Blue Note tradition. Performing as part of the Blue Note 7 will be musical director and pianist Bill Charlap, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, alto saxophonist/flutist Steve Wilson, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash. Commenting on the new CD commemorating the famous record label, Charlap said, "We chose to record compositions that would honor the label and its key players, whittling it down to eight of our favorites from Blue Note’s wide-ranging and extensive catalog.”

An Equal Opportunity University Blue Note Records, known for its "hard bop" style, has been home to such top jazz artists as Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd and Grant Green, as well as some of the most notable jazz musicians of the post-war.
