A RESOLUTION in Support of Read Across America Day on March 2, 1998

<p> 1 98 RS BR 2692</p><p>1 A RESOLUTION in support of Read Across America Day on March 2, 1998. 2 WHEREAS, March 2, 1998, will mark the ninety-fourth birthday of Dr. Suess, the 3much loved, internationally acclaimed author of children's books; and in commemoration 4of his birthday and the children across America, the National Education Association, in 5partnership with the American Library Association, the National PTA, the National 6Association of Elementary School Principals, Reading is Fundamental, the National 7Center for Family Literacy, and other education and community groups are motivating 8children nationwide to expand their knowledge by opening their minds to reading; and 9 WHEREAS, Read Across America Day is a day for all of us to stimulate new 10enthusiasm in our children's interest in reading, and on the evening of March 2, 1998, 11children across the nation will be in the company of a book, whether it be reading at 12home, in school, in libraries, in bookstores or in other community settings; there are plans 13for read-a-thons, book fairs, Dr. Seuss birthday parties, book swaps, choral readings, and 14family literacy nights; 15 NOW, THEREFORE, 16Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the 17Commonwealth of Kentucky: 18 Section 1. This honorable body is indeed proud to recognize March 2, 1998, as 19Read Across America Day, and we encourage students across the Commonwealth to</p><p>20participate in this reading endeavor. We applaud First Lady Judi Patton as state co-chair 21of this event and the Kentucky Education Association for their efforts in making this 22occasion a success. 23 Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in 24recognition of March 2, 1998, as Read Across America Day. 25 Section 3.
