<p> Third Grade Parent Reading Newsletter ● Week of September 18-22nd We are continuing to read the Classification of Animals, a non-fiction/informational text daily in class. The students will also continue to do close reads with other informational text to further their understanding of animal classifications. Through both reading aloud in class and independent close reads, the students will be able to describe various types of animals and classify them by their characteristics, habitats, and behaviors. On the back of this letter, you will find a fluency passage. We ask that your child read this passage every night. Please time your child for 1 minute and write down the number of words they read correctly. </p><p>Spelling Words: Students will be responsible for spelling the root words plus the forms of these words when the suffixes -ed and -ing are added. Students will also be responsible for spelling 2 challenge words this week. Challenge words are words that we will be using very often in our reading. The challenge words are does and done. Root Word -ed -ing smile smiled smiling rake raked raking file filed filing vote voted voting dine dined dining quote quoted quoting raise raised raising tire tired tiring translate translated translating prepare prepared preparing</p><p>Vocabulary Words: 1. Effectively- when something is accomplished, it means that it is done well 2. Metabolism- the process in living animals whereby energy is made from cells in the body as they are produced and as they break down 3. Stately- grand or impressive in size or matter 4. Tentacles- are long, flexible body parts that stick out around the head or mouth and are used for feeling or grasping 5. Column- a set of objects arranged in a vertical, or up and down, arrangement; a supporting base</p><p>**Vocabulary Quiz and Spelling test will be on Friday, September 22nd **</p><p>Language: Sentences vs. Fragments- Students will be reviewing whether groups of words are sentences or fragments. We will also continue working on identifying parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives. *Every night students need to study vocabulary definitions, spelling words, read over and discuss close reads, graphic organizers, or notes as well as read the take home workbook page (nightly reading). The students will answer questions the following day about the nightly reading workbook page. </p><p>Thursday: Snow cones during recess. Cost is $1. Friday: Dress up day- Nerd vs. Jock *Reminder* Students have an at home project due September 27th. School Picture Money is due by October 3rd.</p>
