EXPOSURE & PRACTICE (Aka: the E&P)

Name: ______Date: ______ELA 9 Mr. Rusert

EXPOSURE & PRACTICE!!!!! (aka: the E&P)

Objective: I will be able to build vocabulary through exposure of seeing and saying words and their definitions (denotation) that are found in standardized tests (i.e. SAT, CAHSEE, ACT, everyday conversation, books, magazines, newspapers, TV, film, etc.)

Rationale: The more exposure you get to new words - while making observations (similarities, prior knowledge etc.) - you will be more prepared when it comes to standardized assessments in high school, college entrance exams and college assessments. Expanding your “vocabulary file,” benefits one’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Background: What does it mean to know a word? It’s not enough to know its definition/denotation. We also need to know its function or purpose in context (connotation), whether it is in a single sentence or a passage. It is also important in understanding that there are similar (or same) and opposite words. In addition, we will identify synonyms and antonyms. WE WILL NOT USE THE WORDS IN APPLICATION…..NOT YET ANYWAY. “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-) EXAMPLE Partially open Open, unclosed, unshut, Closed, shut, unopen AJAR (adj) unlatched, partial -

1 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

2 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

3 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

4 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

5 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

6 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

7 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

8 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

9 “W.O.W!” (Words of the Week) Word Matrix Chart

WORD DEFINITION/ SNYNONYM (use ANTONYM CONNOTATION DENOTATION prior knowledge) (focus on denotation ONLY) Postitive (+), Neutral (ne), Negative (-)

10
