02.04 Sound – Work file Here is a quick review of our vocabulary from lesson 2.04 Sound: a wave that is not a form of electromagnetic energy and travels slower than an electromagnetic wave. Sound must travel through a medium and cannot travel in a vacuum (outer space) because there is nothing for it to travel through. Reflection: when sound hits a surface, some of the sound is bounced back. Example: An echo Absorption: when sound hits a surface, some of it passes through or into the material and some of the energy in the wave is lost as it passes through. Refraction: sound travels from a one material to another, it may bend and change directions Relationship between Pitch and Frequency: HIGH pitch sound = HIGH frequency wave LOW pitch sound = LOW frequency wave Amplitude: determines how loud a sound wave is. The amplitude is measured by the height of the wave. HIGH amplitude waves sound LOUD LOW amplitude waves sound SOFT Answ er Questions 1-5 for your 2.04 Assignment You are listening to music in your room and you are asked to turn down the volume of your music. When you turn down the volume what will happen to the sound waves' amplitude?(5pts) 1. Some animals communicate by emitting low frequency sound waves. When the animal emits a low frequency sound wave what is the resulting pitch? (5pts)

2. Your friend tells you they think it would be cool to have band practice on the moon. Is it possible to hear the band play on the moon? Why or why not? (5pts)

3. You have a frustrating day and just feel like screaming; you grab a pillow to scream into it. Which interaction of sound would take place here, (reflection, refraction or absorption), and how did the sound waves move? (5pts)

4. You are exploring in a cave and call out to one of your friends. You hear your echo. Which interaction of sound, (reflection, refraction or absorption), caused the echo and how did the sound waves move? (5pts)
