<p>DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING </p><p>ME317, WINTER 2015-2016</p><p>Text: James G. Bralla, Design for Manufacturing Handbook, McGraw-Hill, 2nd Edition. </p><p>Class content avalable at https://www.rose-hulman.edu/ME317/ and on moodle.</p><p>OBJECTIVES: </p><p>This is an introductory course that examines the interactions between design and manufacturing from the designer’s point of view. Common manufacturing processes will be introduced and design guidelines will be developed for each process. Components of current industrial practice will be discussed. The successful student will develop a basic understanding of the impact his or her design decisions will have on those who attempt to make the product.</p><p>PREREQUISITE: </p><p>The prerequisite for this course is Graphical Communications. It is assumed that you are able to interpret mechanical part drawings. It is also assumed that you can create and print mechanical part drawings using CAD software. </p><p>LOGBOOKS:</p><p>Each student is required to maintain a course logbook. All course work will be performed in your logbook. </p><p>MINI-PROJECTS: </p><p>Four mini-projects will be assigned during the course. These will be discussed as they are assigned. </p><p>EXAMINATIONS: </p><p>There will be four exams and no final.</p><p>GRADING: </p><p>When items are due (projects), they are due promptly at the beginning of class or at the specified time. There is no credit for late work. The weighting that will be used to determine the course grade is shown in the following table:</p><p>Class Participation, Quizzes, and Professionalism 20%</p><p>Mini-Projects 40% Exams 40%</p>
