<p>Virginia State Police www.vsp.virginia.gov Media Release</p><p>News Release No. 20 For Immediate Release: September 16, 2013</p><p>1,264 DANGEROUS DRIVERS CITED DURING SATURDAY’S OPERATION AIR, LAND & SPEED</p><p>RICHMOND – In its continuing efforts to reinforce safe driving behaviors and habits on Virginia’s interstates, Virginia State Police conducted its latest Operation Air, Land & Speed traffic safety campaign on approximately 870 miles of interstate Saturday (Sept. 14, 2013). Virginia troopers saturated the entire lengths of Interstates 81, 95, 85 and 64 during the one-day, enforcement initiative. </p><p>As a result 1,008 speeders and 255 reckless drivers were cited during the traffic-safety campaign. In addition, one drunk driver was arrested on Interstate 81. Sixty-two drivers were cited for failing to buckle up and there were a total of nine drug/felony arrests during the operation.</p><p>The enforcement results are as follows:</p><p>Interstate 81 Interstate 95 Interstate 64 Speed 475 Speed 228 Speed 301 Reckless 95 Reckless 96 Reckless 48 DUI 1 DUI 0 DUI 0 Safety Belt 28 Safety Belt 15 Safety Belt 19 Drug/Felony Arrests 5 Drug/Felony Arrests 1 Drug/Felony Arrests 3 TOTAL 832 TOTAL 510 TOTAL 533</p><p>Interstate 85 Total Speed 4 Speed 1,008 Reckless 16 Reckless 255 DUI 0 DUI 1 Safety Belt 0 Safety Belt 62 Drug/Felony Arrests 0 Drug/Felonies 9 TOTAL 23</p><p>The comprehensive enforcement project is aimed at preventing and reducing traffic crashes and deaths on Virginia’s interstates caused by impaired, reckless, distracted and/or speeding motorists. </p><p>State police operational duties on other interstates, primary and secondary roads were not affected during the campaign. Funding for the enforcement initiative was provided through federal highway safety monies.
