Radnor Township School District

SCORE REPORT

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills) Phoneme Segmentation Fluency & Nonsense Word Fluency

The Radnor Township School District assesses primary grade students’ progress in phonemic awareness and phonics through the DIBELS subtests each year. The purpose of this assessment is to isolate phonemic awareness and phonics skills to determine whether additional support is needed for students. In January at the kindergarten level, Radnor Township School District administers two of the DIBELS subtests: Phoneme Segmentation Fluency and Nonsense Word Fluency. Both assessments are individually administered by the building literacy team and are one minute timed assessments that are nationally normed.

During the Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF) subtest, students are orally given a word and then asked to orally break the word into its sounds. This is similar to tapping out the sounds in words that is done during Fundations instruction. Phoneme Segmentation Fluency scores are reported as the number of correct sounds (phonemes) produced in one minute. During the Nonsense Word Fluency subtest, students are given a list of one syllable, consonant vowel consonant (CVC) words, such as “sog.” Students can read these as whole words or as individual sounds. Nonsense Word Fluency scores are reported as correct letter sounds (CLS) produced in one minute.

Based on these scores, students are grouped into three categories of support. Students scoring At or Above the Benchmark are identified as Core Support, which indicates that no additional support in these areas beyond the classroom is needed at this time. Students scoring Below the Benchmark are identified as Strategic Support, which indicates that a moderate level of additional support would be beneficial. Students scoring Well Below the Benchmark are identified as Intensive Support, which indicates a need for additional intervention.

Below are the winter benchmark levels for kindergarten:

Phoneme Segmentation Fluency Nonsense Word Fluency (CLS) Score Level Phonemes in one minute Letter Sounds in one minute At or Above 20 to 81 17 to 143 Benchmark Below Benchmark 10 to 19 8 to 16 Well Below Benchmark 0 to 9 0 to 7

Below are your child’s scores:

WINTER DIBELS Scores Student School Class Subtest Phoneme Segmentation Fluency Nonsense Word Fluency (CLS) Score Score Level

The district hopes that you find these periodic updates of your child’s progress helpful.
