<p> Tennessee Academic Vocabulary – Second Grade</p><p>Curriculum Area: Language Arts</p><p>WORD DEFINITION CURRICULUM OPPORTUNITIES NUMBER OF EXPOSURES : a word that modifies a noun Adjective by describing a quality of the thing named, indicating its quantity or extent, or specifying a thing as distinct from something else Composition 5 : a literary, musical, or artistic production; especially : a short piece of writing done as a school exercise conversation : talking or a talk between two or more people dictionary : a reference source in print or electronic form giving information about the meanings, forms, pronunciations, uses, and origins of words listed in alphabetical order 2 : a reference book that lists in alphabetical order terms or names important to a particular subject along with explanations of their meanings and uses <a law dictionary> discussion : conversation or debate for the purpose of understanding a question or subject Everyday Language spoken by a people language as opposed to literary language fiction 1 : something told or written that is not fact 2 : a made-up story folktale : a story made up and handed down by the common people glossary 1 : a list of the hard or unusual words found in a book 2 : a dictionary of the special terms in a particular field Group discussion A discussion among participants who have an agreed topic Guest speaker A person who has been invited to present a speech at an event where they are not the host. Usually a person who has special knowledge to present to the attendees The central figure of a story or Main character book Main idea The main idea of a paragraph is what all the sentences are about: the main idea of a book is the topic written about margin 1 : the part of a page outside the main body of printed or written matter 2 : boundary area Mental image An iconic mental representation message : a communication in writing, in speech, or by signals 2 : a messenger's errand or function 3 : an underlying theme or idea Non fiction literature or cinema that is not fictional noun a word that is the name of something (as a person, animal, place, thing, quality, idea, or action) and that is typically used in a sentence as subject or object of a verb or as object of a preposition Predictable book A book which is easy foretell on the basis of observation, experience, or reasoning prewriting : planning and getting ideas in order before writing Pronoun : a word that is used as a substitute for a noun publish b : to print the work of purpose 1 : something set up as an end to be attained 2 : an object or result achieved To read again Reread Spelling patterns Rules which govern the spellings of wordsf A list of divisions and Table of contents (chapters or articles) and the pages on which they start A book used in schools or Textbooks colleges for the formal study of a subject theater : a building or area for dramatic performances or for showing movies 2 : a place like a theater; especially : a room often with rising rows of seats (as for a lecture) 3 : a place of significant events or action <a theater of war> verb a word that is usually the grammatical center of a predicate and expresses an act, occurrence, or state of being and that in various languages is inflected (as for agreement with the subject or for tense)</p>
