Plan and teach well structured lessons 5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils</p><p>Explaining</p><p>Explaining provides information about WHAT, WHY and HOW. It describes NEW TERMS or CONCEPTS and CLARIFIES their meaning. Being able to EXPLAIN effectively is an important skill.</p><p>Does not rely on long lectures – is mixed with tasks, activities or questions</p><p>Actively involves pupils Clear A GOOD Well structured Relates new work to concepts, interests or work familiar to pupils. EXPLANATION</p><p>Uses language the pupils Takes account of can understand pupils’ needs Takes account of pupils’ prior knowledge and understanding</p><p>The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. (William Arthur-Ward) Practise the speed at which you talk Start with real basics and build Body on the complexity language</p><p>Voice too Variation in loud/too quiet? tone</p><p> Use key words, terms, phrases incorporate into all phases of lesson</p><p> Entrance  Settling down  Lesson proper  Clearing up  Exit</p><p> Ask pupils to demonstrate understanding of your explanation to highlight misunderstandings/misconceptions/progress.</p><p> Point out most common misconceptions/errors made by pupils relating to the topic.</p><p> Take account of pupils’ learning modalities. Modelling</p><p>“Show them what you want them to do.”</p><p>The perfectly effective lesson is what good teachers continue to strive for throughout their careers.</p><p>Action</p><p>Think about what it was like to experience a lesson of an effective teacher. Did you feel secure about taking part and offering ideas/contributions. Was the environment peaceful? Did you feel as if you were making progress but not rushed? Were you stimulated, inspired and motivated.
