<p>Chabot College Fall 2006</p><p>Course Outline for Dental Hygiene 60 DENTAL ANATOMY AND MORPHOLOGY</p><p>Catalog Description:</p><p>60 - Dental Anatomy and Morphology 1.5 units</p><p>Development, eruption, and structures of the intraoral cavity and extraoral structures; structures of the teeth, tooth numbering systems, occlusion and anomalies. Identification of teeth and oral structures. Prerequisite: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program. Corequisite: Dental Hygiene 60L, 69A and 71A. 1.5 hours.</p><p>Prerequisite Skills:</p><p>None</p><p>Expected Outcomes for Students:</p><p>Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. explain oral histology and embryology; 2. identify histologically the normal structures of the oral cavity; 3. describe the embryonic development of the head, neck and oral cavity; 4. identify the extraoral landmarks of the head and neck; 5. distinguish and describe the normal intraoral landmarks; 6. describe the embryonic development of the teeth; 7. identify tooth form and function, distinguishing major crown and root characteristics; 8. communicate and apply the universal, palmer and FDI numbering systems; 9. evaluate and communicate the development, eruption and exfoliation cycles of both the primary and permanent dentitions; 10. differentiate between deciduous and permanent dentitions; 11. interpret the classification of occlusion and recognize early signs of deviation in deciduous, mixed and permanent dentitions; 12. identify and analyze common dental anomalies found in the dentition; 13. identify and communicate the major parts of a tooth; 14. identify each of the five surfaces of a tooth and locate the point and line angles; 15. interpret and apply principles of dental notation as it relates to restorative charting; 16. distinguish between and identify the structures surrounding and supporting the teeth.</p><p>Course Content:</p><p>1. Write a brief research essay on tooth histology b. Discovery and self directed research on assigned topic c. Organize, write, and present a brief oral presentation on selected topic</p><p>2.
