2011 Southern California USATF Cross Country Championships

2011 Southern California USATF Cross Country Championships

Something about the words “cross country” seems to scare off the average runner. His (and her) loss. Winning, in several senses of the word, was Track Club Los Angeles at the 2011 Southern California USATF Cross Country Championships. Although TCLA fielded only a men’s masters team, the team made the whole club proud. On a challenging course at Kenneth Hahn Park featuring two long, steep hills that sandwiched some serious rolling, twisting terrain, times were not going to be meaningful (so it was just as well that the course featured no mile marks). To add to the “fun,” the 6K course turned out to be almost four miles thanks to course marshals who sent the runners over an extra third of a mile.

Nick Bowden led the way for the club and every other racer. Congratulations to Nick on his new title, SCA/USATF XC Men’s Masters Champion. Mike Branch was second for the club for much of the race, and took a big one for the team in the last 50 meters. While putting in his patented kick, he stepped on ground over a gopher path, which promptly gave way. It is questionable which suffered more, his shoulder or his pride. Still, he got right back up and finished without anyone passing him in the meantime. Rit Tun also sacrificed himself by racing as he still has tired legs from his recent marathon efforts. Yet, with his family cheering, Rit ran steady and finished fourth for the club. Taking the race seriously, as one should, Adam Radly ran a cross country race a week earlier to be prepared for the big one. It paid off as Adam was the club’s last scorer.

Although the club ran as one team, it had enough members run to field a second team. Leading this group were John Landry and Mike Mahruin. John is a frequent racer, and Mike, as of late, is an infrequent racer (this was his first hard effort, workouts included, in a long time). Brian Panosian fought hard in the closing stretch to keep his spot. Drawing on a lot of cross country experience, David Pullman made the whole thing look graceful. Finally, with his finish, Michael Berger should have ended up pocketing some prize money for finishing third in his age group in the SCA/USATF XC Grand Prix.

Racing is always more fun when cheering is involved, and TCLA athletes had great support from other club members, including Alex Breckenridge, Tim Petersen, Bert Whitson, and Lily Zepeda (or whatever name she is going by as a wedded woman). Times will be posted below once they are available, but unless you actually ran this course, you will not appreciate what they mean.

Athlete Time

Nick Bowden Mt.
