NASA-Threads Electricity and Magnetism Lesson 31: Whiskers

Maze Navigation

Navigating your way through a maze can be a rather tricky thing to do. You should already have your whiskers set up and good to go. But, how do you apply those whiskers to getting

you through the maze? Good question.

You can see by looking at the diagram above that you will not be able to solely rely on your whiskers to get you to the end point. But, we’ll jump off that bridge when we get to it. First it is important that you make sure your whiskers are working for you in the exact way that you want them to. Typically everyone will have different set-ups for their whiskers and for the program itself. There are some steps you can go through to make sure you have your whiskers programmed the way you want them.

Whisker Checklist

Ensure that the schematic is set up correctly, without this; you really can’t do anything else. Find a copy of the schematic set up in your Boe-Bot book. NASA-Threads Electricity and Magnetism Lesson 31: Whiskers

Once whiskers are put on, be positive that they are mirror images of each other; that is, they are equal distances away from their sensors and from the Boe-Bot itself. This will be easier to notice once you are running the program. Write and test the whisker navigation program (don’t forget to include comment lines). Does everything work just the way you want it to? Probably not. Don’t worry; this will take a good bit of trial and error. You do need get everything like you like it before moving on to programming for the maze. It is best to correct and tweak your programming one step at a time. If you wait until writing the entire program before ever even testing it, you will run into trouble. Now that you have the whiskers working just like you want them to, move on to writing the program to direct your Boe-Bot through the maze.

Maze Checklist

It will definitely be helpful if you were to make your own model of the maze so that you have something to go by as you test your program out.

Are you able to get your Boe-Bot through the maze using only the whiskers? I doubt it. You can hopefully get it to the end portion of the maze, but how does it know where to go and when to stop? You will need to write the maze program in a way that the Boe-Bot will be able to navigate to the end with (ideally) minimal help from the whiskers.

Good luck!
