<p>Sample Primary Sponges</p><p>Be ready to…</p><p>-tell one of the school rules</p><p>-tell the names of the students in the class whose name begins with “M”</p><p>-draw something that is only drawn with circles.</p><p>-tell a good healthy habit</p><p>-draw something of a given color</p><p> Flash fingers. Have students tell the number. (For 3rd grade and above, flash two numbers, and students must give the product)</p><p> Say a number, day of the week, month, and ask the students which one comes next.</p><p> What number comes between 31-33, 45-47, etc.</p><p> Put spelling words in alphabetical order.</p><p> Think of an animal that lives on a farm, in water, in the jungle, etc.</p><p> List things you can touch, things you can smell, big things, little things, etc.</p><p> List colors you are wearing.</p><p>Intermediate Sponges</p><p>Language Arts</p><p>What’s in a Name? Make up as many words from a person’s complete name</p><p>Poetry: Write an acrostic poem using the letters from your name.</p><p>List your favorite books and the favorite books of four of your friends in alphabetical order.</p><p>Use a newspaper to cut out ten words that start with the same letter, then alphabetize them.</p><p>Math</p><p>Skip counting (forwards and backwards)</p><p>Mental math I Spy with 2-D and 3-D shapes</p><p>Flash cards</p><p>Students “place orders” from catalogs and find the total cost.</p><p>Science</p><p>Use a beaker and an eye dropper to determine what a solution is. Do this as a science experiment with the correct procedure.</p><p>Aspirin oil flour colored water sugar</p><p>Juices salt lemon juice soap powder liquid soap</p><p>Determine how many drops of water of water will fit on a penny. Use an eye dropper to test your hypothesis.</p><p>Social Studies</p><p>Guess the country or state</p><p>Place states on a map (great Smartboard activity for this one or buy two maps…cut one up)</p><p>Learn words in a foreign language</p><p>Share folktales from around the world.</p><p>Other Sponges:</p><p>Simple origami</p><p>Simon Says</p><p>Brain Teasers</p><p>Songs</p><p>Jokes (preview these first!)</p><p>Puzzles</p><p>Read a chapter (or a few pages) from a novel. </p>
